Abbott, the global healthcare company founded in 1888 by Chicago physician Dr. Wallace C. Abbott, has used a stylized lowercase “a” as its corporate symbol since 1959. The mark, which Abbott itself describes as “a classic of industrial design,” has remained the cornerstone of the company’s visual identity for more than six decades.[1]

Design and History

The Abbott “A” logo was created by American graphic designer Don Ervin (1925-2010), who served as director of graphic design at George Nelson & Company from 1954 to 1962.[2] The North Carolina State University Design Library holds documentation of the trademark development work, crediting Ervin and the Office of George Nelson & Co. with the project.[3]

Abbott’s official heritage timeline dates the adoption of the “A” logo to 1959.[1] The symbol replaced the company’s original wordmark, which had been in use since the company’s founding in 1888. The redesign came during a period when Abbott was diversifying across pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and nutrition, and the new identity was intended to work across the company’s expanding range of products.[4]

According to a design history account, the development process involved a long study in which dozens of symbol concepts were designed and tested before the final mark was selected.[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

Ervin himself stated that the Abbott “a” was derived from the serpent wrapped around the staff of Aesculapius, the traditional symbol of medicine and healing.[2] The single continuous line of the stylized lowercase letter was also noted as a practical solution capable of handling the extreme variations in reproduction dimensions required by the company’s diverse product lines.[4]

The mark has been used alongside the Abbott wordmark in various lockups over the years. Abbott’s current corporate identity pairs the “A” symbol with the company name, and the logo is registered as a trademark of Abbott Laboratories.[5]
