Sanofi, the French global healthcare company, adopted its current corporate logo in February 2022 as part of a broader brand renewal. The mark consists of the wordmark “Sanofi” in black lowercase letters, bookended by two purple dots. The design was developed by FutureBrand Paris, which was engaged to bring clarity and cohesion to the company after decades of acquisitions had left it with a fragmented identity.[1][2]
Design and History
Sanofi unveiled the new corporate brand on February 3, 2022, describing it as a “bold and unifying” identity that supports the modernization and transformation the company launched in December 2019.[1] For the first time in the company’s roughly 50-year history, its various business units, including Sanofi Pasteur and Sanofi Genzyme, were united under the singular Sanofi name and brand.[1]
The previous logo, introduced in 2011, was designed by the French agency Saguez & Partners.[3] That identity accompanied the company’s name change from sanofi-aventis to Sanofi, which was approved by shareholders in May 2011. The earlier name was considered difficult to pronounce in some languages, particularly in Asia.[3] The 2011 mark was called the “bird of hope” logo, and its three complementary shapes symbolized the company’s three strategic principles: Innovation, Adaptability, and External Growth. The shapes formed a whole described as a planet with the bird of hope in its center.[4] That colorful design replaced an all-blue logo dating from 2005.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Sanofi’s official description of the 2022 logo states that it is inspired by the “simple and motion-oriented codes of the tech industry.” The two purple dots embody the scientific journey between a starting point, the curiosity of questioning the status quo and wondering “what if?”, and a finish line, the eureka moment where innovative solutions are unlocked to impact people’s lives.[1] FutureBrand’s own description echoes this, noting that one dot symbolizes curiosity and the other discovery, reflecting Sanofi’s journey from asking “what if?” to delivering real-world health solutions.[2]
The purple dots were also chosen to help Sanofi stand out in a pharmaceutical market where red and blue are the most frequently used colors, as with GSK and Pfizer.[5]
Typography and Design
The 2022 wordmark uses lowercase letters, a new addition to Sanofi’s marque, intended to allow greater readability.[5] The brand identity system includes a custom typeface developed for the company, with both serif and sans-serif versions, each in three weights, created under the creative direction of FutureBrand Paris.[6]
