Allergan is a global pharmaceutical company that adopted its current name and visual identity in June 2015, when Actavis plc completed its acquisition of the original Allergan and assumed the Allergan name. The rebranding united the company’s global portfolio under one identity and marked its emergence as what it called a “Growth Pharma” leader.[1]
Design and History
The 2015 identity replaced the Actavis logo, which featured green text and an angular squiggle, with a new mark showing the Allergan name in navy-blue italicized type accompanied by a group of green, blue and navy circles.[2] The company described the redesign as “distinctive” and stated that the new icon “speaks to the strength of the Company’s unique capabilities, the energy and passion of its people and its forward momentum.”[1]
The circular shapes were described by the company as personifying “movement; purposeful paths of change and growth; growing spheres of influence and ideas; and achievement across brands and generics.”[1] The result was characterized as a “momentum-building and accessible visualization” celebrating Allergan’s emergence as a Growth Pharma leader.[1]
In 2020, following AbbVie’s acquisition of Allergan, the standalone aesthetics unit rebranded as Allergan Aesthetics and launched a new global brand identity focused on “the power of confidence.”[3] The refreshed identity highlighted “real people and patients across different ethnicities, genders, and skin tones” to reflect the company’s focus on developing science-backed aesthetic medicine for people of every background.[4] The new brand and digital features went live across platforms on October 5, 2020.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2015 logo’s iconography was documented in the company’s own trademark filing. The mark consists of the word “ALLERGAN” in a stylized dark blue font, to the left of which is a “stylized futuristic comet design” comprised of circles: three large dark blue circles, followed by four medium blue circles, and additional circles in light blue, green, medium green, and yellow.[5] The colors dark blue, medium blue, light blue, green, medium green, and yellow were claimed as features of the mark.[5]
The company’s official description of the icon emphasized movement and growth rather than literal product symbolism. The circular shapes were said to personify “purposeful paths of change and growth” and “growing spheres of influence and ideas.”[1]
Typography and Design
The 2015 wordmark used a stylized dark blue font for the Allergan name, with the type rendered in italicized form.[5][2] The specific typeface used in the wordmark has not been publicly documented in available sources.
