Almirall is a Spanish pharmaceutical company headquartered in Barcelona, focused on medical dermatology. The company was founded in 1943 as Laboratory Almirall, S.A. and today operates through affiliates across Europe and the United States. Its current visual identity dates from a 2017 corporate rebranding that accompanied a strategic shift toward skin health.
Design and History
In September 2017, Almirall presented a new corporate identity designed to integrate the various companies it had acquired over the preceding years under a single brand umbrella. The company stated that the new identity arose from a need to show coherence between its business model, corporate strategy and visual identity. The rebranding included a renewal of its brand image and the introduction of the tagline “Feel the Science,” reflecting its decision to position itself as a scientific partner to dermatology and aesthetic professionals, as well as to patients and clients. The company filed trademark applications for its new look in March 2017, several months before the public launch. [2] The rebranding followed Almirall’s strategic pivot toward dermatology, which began in 2013 with the acquisition of Aqua Pharmaceuticals and was solidified in 2014 when the company sold its respiratory portfolio to AstraZeneca. [2]
The current logo consists of a graphic symbol paired with the company name. The symbol is described in USPTO trademark records as a design comprised of three lines arranged one on top of another on a horizontal slant, slanting down to the left, with a semi-circle that starts to the left of the middle line, curves around underneath the lines and ends to the right of the lowest slanted line. [3] An earlier version of the Almirall mark, filed in 2014, was described as three lines on a horizontal slant beneath a semi-circle, with the word “ALMIRALL” in a stylized font to the right of the design. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
Almirall’s leadership described the 2017 identity as reflecting the company’s evolution to better adapt to the demands of the dermatology and aesthetics fields. President Jorge Gallardo stated that the new identity was born from the need to show coherence between the business model, corporate strategy and visual identity. [1] The company said the new branding reinforced its position as a pharmaceutical company specialized in science and its commitment to offering medical solutions. [5]
The tagline “Feel the Science” was described by the company as reflecting its firm decision to work hand in hand with customers, becoming a scientific partner to help dermatology and aesthetic professionals as well as their patients, and making science accessible and practical. [2]
Typography and Design
Trademark records for the 2017 logo indicate that color was claimed as a feature of the mark. A related trademark filing for the “almirall share” sub-brand, filed the same day, specifies the word “almirall” in blue and “share” in green, with the colors identified as Pantone 295 (blue) and Pantone 2239 (green). [6] [7] The main Almirall wordmark was filed as a “word and device in colours” trademark in May 2017. [8]
