AmerisourceBergen was a global healthcare solutions company and pharmaceutical distributor headquartered in the Philadelphia area. Its visual identity underwent two significant transformations in the 2020s: a comprehensive rebrand in January 2021, followed by a corporate renaming to Cencora in August 2023 that refined the earlier design system.
Design and History
On January 26, 2021, AmerisourceBergen unveiled a new company brand, including a new logo, website and renewed design. The company stated the new wordmark logo was “a move toward simplicity, increasing impact while reducing complexity,” projecting a forward-thinking, bold organization.[1] The rebrand was the result of a multi-year process conducted with MetaDesign, a global branding and design firm.[1]
According to German design publication PAGE, the new logo was stripped of its previous blue-and-white pictorial element and focused entirely on the company name, set against a warm violet-blue background.[2] The brand system incorporated vibrant colors ranging from violet-blue to red, pink, green, orange and yellow, used as backgrounds or in gradients throughout the identity.[2]
In August 2023, AmerisourceBergen Corporation completed its name and stock ticker change to Cencora, Inc.[3] The renaming provided an opportunity to refine the visual identity introduced in 2021. MetaDesign documented updates including a “Core Gradient” and a simplified logo that reinforced the brand’s vibrancy and adaptability, with new design elements symbolizing connections between Cencora’s businesses.[4]
The transition to the Cencora name was implemented gradually across the company’s business units. Starting in spring 2024, the company began introducing visual changes and new logos that included the Cencora name in marketing efforts, with the change described as simply replacing “AmerisourceBergen” in business unit logos with “Cencora.”[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Cencora name was inspired by “center” and “core,” symbolizing the company’s mission to place people and animals at the heart of healthcare innovation.[4] The company’s official announcement described the new name as reflecting its unified global presence and collective purpose of creating healthier futures.[6]
MetaDesign described the Cencora wordmark as prioritizing simplicity and clarity while projecting confidence and approachability. The distinctive “True Blue” color was chosen as a trustworthy tone anchoring a dynamic palette of energizing colors, complemented by gradients conveying progression and movement.[4]
Typography and Design
The 2021 AmerisourceBergen rebrand introduced a custom sans-serif typeface called AB Gilroy. PAGE described it as round, geometric and warm, with distinctive details in the capital A and B of the company name.[2] The font featured an OpenType capability accommodating global languages and extensive digital applications.[1]
Following the Cencora renaming, the typeface was updated to Cencora Gilroy, described by MetaDesign as a modern, clean and highly functional typeface designed to support over a hundred global languages.[4]
