Ipsen is a global biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, focused on oncology, rare diseases and neuroscience. Its current corporate logo pairs the wordmark “IPSEN” with an abstract S-shaped symbol in two shades of blue.
Design and History
The current Ipsen logo consists of a vertical dark blue S-shaped curved line that is dissected by two light blue horizontal curved lines, with a light blue dot positioned to the right of the curvature of the upper horizontal line, together with the term “IPSEN” in dark blue.[1] The same S-shaped device appears in the company’s “IPSEN INNOVATION FOR PATIENT CARE” tagline lockup, where the stylized wording appears in dark blue alongside the S-shaped design in dark blue and two smaller curved lines and a dot in light blue.[2]
The mark’s origins trace to a 2003 corporate rebranding. In May 2003, the French pharmaceutical company Beaufour Ipsen announced a change of name and logo ahead of a planned stock market listing. The Beaufour name, which belonged to the founding family from 1929, was dropped because it was considered unpronounceable by English speakers.[3] Trademark filings for “New IPSEN Logo” variants were filed in November 2003, confirming the introduction of a new visual identity at that time.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The visual elements are described only in formal trademark registrations, which detail the shape, arrangement and colors of the mark without attributing meaning to them.[5] Any interpretation of the symbol’s significance beyond its registered description would be speculative.
Typography and Design
The Ipsen wordmark is rendered in dark blue lettering, as documented in trademark filings.[1] The company’s colors are formally claimed in its trademark registrations as dark blue (Pantone 281C) and light blue (Pantone 7461C).[5] No official source identifies the specific typeface used in the wordmark.
