PRA Health Sciences was a global contract research organization (CRO) headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, that operated under this name from 2014 until its acquisition by ICON plc in July 2021. The company’s visual identity centered on a magenta-pink wordmark and a symbol the company called its “convergence mark,” introduced alongside the 2014 rebrand from PRA International.
Design and History
On June 16, 2014, PRA announced it had changed its name from PRA International to PRA Health Sciences. The name change was described as the culmination of several strategic actions supporting the company’s commitment to the future of clinical development. Colin Shannon, then PRA’s president and CEO, said the change reflected the company’s “historical roots as a scientifically rich company.” [1]
The rebrand was driven by a “convergence” theme that emerged during the process. According to Applied Clinical Trials, which covered the rebrand at the time, the logo, which PRA called its convergence mark, symbolized the bringing together of people, companies, expertise, technologies and other factors to converge into the best solution for its clients. [2]
PRA had previously rebranded from PRA International to PRA in 2011, positioning the company for additional capital investment and acquisitions. The 2014 rebrand to PRA Health Sciences was intended to enhance its image as a top-tier CRO, enabling a transformative acquisition and subsequent IPO. [3]
In July 2021, ICON plc completed its acquisition of PRA Health Sciences. The combined company retained the ICON name, and PRA’s branding was phased out in favor of ICON’s logo and colors. [4] [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The convergence mark was the central symbol of the PRA Health Sciences identity. PRA described it as representing the convergence of people, companies, expertise, technologies and other factors into the best solution for clients. The theme of convergence was described as the impetus for the entire 2014 rebrand. [2]
The magenta-pink color of the PRA Health Sciences branding was a distinctive departure from the blues commonly used by pharmaceutical industry competitors.
Typography and Design
In a later brand refresh, designer Veronica Cordi led work for PRA Health Sciences that refined core elements including type, color and logo to address digital usability issues and align with modern implementation standards. The refresh introduced a dynamic visual system featuring bold geometric forms, expressive typography and modular layouts. The project credits list Aneta Kapron as Creative Director and Kelsey Bolognese for design support. [6]
