Avispa Fukuoka is a Japanese professional football club based in Fukuoka City, competing in the J1 League. The club’s visual identity centers on the wasp, referenced in its Spanish-derived name “Avispa,” and is expressed through a detailed emblem and a separate wordmark logo that the club describes as depicting the flight trajectory of a bee.
Design and History
The club traces its roots to 1982, when it was founded as the Chuo Bohan soccer club in Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture. After relocating to Fukuoka in 1994 and competing as Fukuoka Blux, the team was renamed Avispa Fukuoka upon its admission to the J.League in 1996.[1] The name change was prompted by a potential trademark conflict with the menswear company Brooks Brothers.[2]
The club’s official profile explains that “Avispa” derives from the Latin “Avis,” meaning “bird” or “that which takes flight,” carrying a wish for the club to take root locally while advancing toward the world. The wasp itself was chosen for its behavioral traits of collective action and agility, which the club associates with its playing style of swift, coordinated, and varied group attacks.[3]
In 2020, ahead of the club’s 25th anniversary, Avispa Fukuoka revised its main club color from “Navy Blue” to “Navy.” The club explained that while its first uniforms had been silver-based since its founding, it had adopted the secondary color Navy Blue as its main color starting with the 2003 season. However, a gap had developed between the club’s official “Navy Blue” and the “Navy” that fans perceived, prompting the formal revision. The new main color code was set to PANTONE 281C, with the change taking effect from January 2020.[4]
For the club’s 30th anniversary in 2025, Avispa Fukuoka adopted the theme “TRUE NAVY, TRUE AVISPA.” The commemorative logo rendered the number “30” in a honeycomb pattern, a motif drawn from the beehive, the club’s symbol. The design was also incorporated into that season’s uniforms.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s official profile provides a detailed explanation of the emblem’s elements. The shield shape represents the hometown. The club name encircling the ball signifies harmony and unity among the eleven players. The grass pattern around the emblem represents tenacious defense. The spear shape at the bottom expresses “the wasp’s sting,” symbolizing sharp attacks. The crown at the top symbolizes the “king.”[3]
The club’s main color, Navy, is described as evoking the deep blue of the Genkai Sea facing Fukuoka, expressing the club’s desire to build ever deeper relationships with fans, supporters, and all related parties.[4]
Typography and Design
Separate from the emblem, Avispa Fukuoka maintains a wordmark logo. According to the club’s official profile, the logo depicts the flight trajectory of a bee. The flowing letterforms, with the letters A, S, and P as focal points, are said to represent free play and ball movement on the field.[3]
