Barneys New York is an American luxury department store brand founded in 1923 by Barney Pressman at Seventh Avenue and 17th Street in Manhattan. The company’s visual identity is best known for its black serif wordmark, which appeared on store awnings, shopping bags and advertising for decades and became closely associated with the retailer’s upscale repositioning under the Pressman family.

Design and History

The Barneys New York wordmark was created by the New York design firm Chermayeff & Geismar. The firm, founded by Ivan Chermayeff and Tom Geismar in 1957, counts Barneys New York among its many corporate identity clients, alongside Chase Bank, Mobil Oil, PBS and National Geographic.[1] The Los Angeles Times, reviewing Tom Geismar’s 2011 book Identify, noted that the firm was hired to upgrade the image of the discount clothier known as “Barney’s” as it transformed into the upscale “Barneys New York.”[2]

Business Insider, citing Barneys as its source, reports that the store commissioned Ivan Chermayeff to create an official logo in the 1980s, a mark the retailer continued to use through its 2019 bankruptcy.[3] Vanity Fair described the resulting wordmark as “Ivan Chermayeff’s iconic BARNEYS NEW YORK logo,” familiar from the store’s awnings and heavy-stock shopping bags.[4]

The AIGA Design Archives credits the identity to Chermayeff & Geismar, Inc., listing Ivan Chermayeff, Tom Geismar and Steff Geissbuhler as design directors.[5] The book Logotype dates the design to 1981 and credits Chermayeff & Geismar (Tom Geismar and Steff Geissbuhler) for the department store chain’s logotype.[6]

In 2017, the lettering studio Terminal Design documented a refinement of the mark. According to the studio, the “venerable old logo was looking pretty bumpy and worn,” and its digital artwork appeared to have been auto-traced from an old scan in 1993. Terminal Design redrew and cleaned up the logo, creating two versions in the process.[7]

Barneys New York filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2019. Authentic Brands Group acquired the company’s intellectual property in November 2019, and the brand was subsequently licensed to Saks Fifth Avenue, which opened Barneys at Saks shops within its stores.[8] In October 2024, Authentic and Saks Global formed a joint venture called Authentic Luxury Group, with Barneys New York as its first focus brand.[9]

Meaning and Symbolism

The wordmark is composed of two stacked lines of sculptural capital letters, with the “N” of “New” positioned directly above the “Y” of “York” in the center of the composition.[10] This stacked arrangement, with the overlapping N-Y pair at the heart of the lockup, is the most distinctive structural feature of the identity.

In November 2024, Barneys Japan announced the launch of a new secondary “BARNEYS” logo for the 2024 fall/winter season. According to the company’s press release, it was the first time Barneys New York had produced an official logo beyond its existing brand mark. The new logo was inspired by the brand’s core philosophy of “TASTE, LUXURY, HUMOR” and was applied to casual items such as hoodies, T-shirts and caps.[11]

Typography and Design

The Barneys New York wordmark uses a serif letterform with wide, generous letter spacing across two lines of capitals. The AIGA Design Archives classifies the work under both “Brand and identity systems” and “Type design,” reflecting the custom lettering involved in the mark.[5] Terminal Design’s 2017 redrawing of the letterforms confirms that the logo is a custom-drawn wordmark rather than a stock typeface, and that its digital files required careful manual reconstruction to restore the original lettering.[7]
