Party City is an American party supplies retailer founded in 1986 in East Hanover, New Jersey. The company operates more than 750 company-owned and franchise stores under the Party City banner, along with its e-commerce site PartyCity.com.[1]
Design and History
The earliest Party City logo, used from 1986 to 1987, was a simple black all-caps wordmark with no additional graphics or tagline.[2] In 1987 the company introduced a colorful identity with letters placed at varying heights and angles, each character outlined in black. The palette used orange, blue, yellow, red and green across the two words.[2]
For a brief period in 1987 to 1988, a white and gray version appeared with a city skyline and fireworks behind the lettering, accompanied by the tagline “The Party Doesn’t Start Without Us!” A colored version of that design followed in 1988 with the tagline “The Discount Party Super Store.”[2]
The 1987 multicolor wordmark returned in 1999 with darker, more saturated colors, then shifted to a lighter palette in 2002 with slightly adjusted letterforms.[2]
In 2006, Party City introduced a completely new identity. Purple was added to the palette, the shades of the other colors were changed, and for the first time all characters were aligned on a single straight line.[2] The current wordmark, registered with the USPTO in 2012, consists of the words “PARTY CITY” in stylized form with each letter in a distinct color.[3]
Party City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early 2023 and closed the majority of its corporate-owned stores by early 2025. The brand was later sold to a new owner for $20 million, with plans to reopen retail locations and the website.[4] Under the new ownership, the Party City logo remains in use online and through compact retail concepts such as pop-up shops inside Staples locations.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The USPTO trademark record for the current Party City wordmark documents the color arrangement precisely: in the word “Party,” the “p” is red, the “a” is purple, the “r” is yellow, the “t” is blue and the “y” is green. In the word “City,” the “c” is red, the “i” is yellow, the dot on the “i” is blue, the “t” is green and the “y” is purple. Red, purple, yellow, blue and green are claimed as features of the mark.[3]
Typography and Design
The current Party City logo uses a bold, rounded sans-serif typeface with all letters set in a single straight line, a departure from the angled and staggered letterforms of earlier versions.[2] The USPTO record describes the mark simply as the words “PARTY CITY” in stylized form, with no additional graphic elements such as balloons or icons.[3]
