Vend was a New Zealand-based cloud point-of-sale and retail management software company, founded in 2010 by Vaughan Rowsell and headquartered in Auckland.[1][2] The company was acquired by Lightspeed in 2021 and its product was subsequently folded into Lightspeed Retail (X-Series), with the standalone Vend brand disappearing.[3][4]
Design and History
The Vend logo was registered as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The registration describes the mark as consisting of the word “vend” in white lowercase letters on a green oval background with rounded corners, with green and white claimed as features of the mark.[5] The trademark registration was later cancelled in 2021.[5]
Shortly before the Lightspeed acquisition, designer Brad Fafejta worked with Vend founder Vaughan Fergusson to refresh the company’s brand. Fafejta noted that Vend had initially received industry praise for an “off-beat identity” that stood out among similar tech offerings, but as the company grew it struggled to balance its earlier disruptive tone with a matured product offering. The refresh paired simple product imagery with hand-drawn illustrations and geometric shapes in an energetic, signature style, and was later extended into the product itself through icons, design systems and a more diverse illustration set.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The trademark record confirms only the visual elements: the lowercase word “vend” in white on a green oval with rounded corners.[5] The brand refresh work by Brad Fafejta describes the broader visual style as using friendly, humorous retail moments to communicate that the company understood retailers’ world, but does not assign specific symbolic meaning to the logo’s colors or form.[6]
Typography and Design
The trademark registration confirms that the wordmark uses lowercase lettering, but does not identify the specific typeface.[5] The brand refresh by Fafejta introduced hand-drawn illustrations and geometric shapes as part of the broader visual identity system, though this work describes the marketing and product visuals rather than a specific logo typography.[6]
