Steemit is a blockchain-based social media platform launched in 2016, where users earn cryptocurrency for posting and curating content. The platform’s visual identity has undergone a significant evolution, most notably in late 2017 when Steemit introduced a distinct logo for its flagship website, steemit.com, separate from the Steem blockchain’s own mark.
Design and History
In its early days, Steemit used the blue Steem logo, which features three S-shaped squiggles and is licensed under Creative Commons CC0, meaning it could be freely copied, modified, or distributed even for commercial purposes without permission or attribution.[1] This logo continues to represent the Steem blockchain and STEEM currency.[2]
On November 1, 2017, Steemit revealed an entirely new rebrand and redesign of its website and mobile app ahead of SteemFest 2 in Lisbon.[3] The company announced that steemit.com was getting its own logo and color scheme to set it apart from the Steem blockchain’s branding.[3] The new mark was designed as two overlapping chat bubbles, which the company said more accurately depicts that Steemit is a communications platform.[3]
In the official announcement, the Steemit team described the new logo as “a nod to the community, the conversations, and the powerful voices we aim to amplify.”[4] The primary motivation for the redesign was to improve the user interface and user experience of steemit.com.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The two overlapping chat bubbles in the Steemit logo were chosen to illustrate that Steemit is a communications platform.[3] The mark is colored in a friendly teal, which the company stated illustrates the monetary aspect of the platform.[3] The Steemit brand and logo are protected by intellectual property laws, including copyright and other proprietary rights of the United States and other countries, distinguishing it from the openly licensed Steem blockchain logo.[1]
Brand asset databases list the primary Steemit brand color as Caribbean Green with the hex code #06D6A9.[5] This turquoise-green tone aligns with the “friendly teal” description from the 2017 rebrand announcement.[3]
