The UEFA Euro 2024 logo is the official tournament emblem for the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship, hosted in Germany. The brand identity was unveiled on 5 October 2021 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, where the tournament final was later played. The logo was designed and developed by the Lisbon-based creative agency VMLY&R Branding, following a collaboration between UEFA, the German Football Association (DFB) and the ten host cities that began in September 2018. [1]
Design and History
The logo draws its colours from the flags of all 55 UEFA member associations, which combine in various arrangements to echo the shape of the Olympiastadion roof. At the centre of the emblem sits the Henri Delaunay Cup, the trophy awarded to the tournament winner. Surrounding the trophy are 24 coloured slices, one for each of the 24 teams that qualified for the final tournament. [1]
The identity was presented at 20:24 local time as part of a light show at the Berlin stadium, an event attended by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, DFB interim president Rainer Koch and tournament director Philipp Lahm. [2] Alongside the main logo, each of the ten host cities received its own local logo, derived from the main emblem and its colour scheme, featuring a chosen landmark from the city skyline. [3]
The tournament slogan, “United by Football. Vereint im Herzen Europas”, was presented together with the logo. The slogan had already been used during the bidding process and was selected together with the host cities. [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
UEFA described the brand as promoting a tournament where everyone feels welcome and diversity is celebrated. The logo and its associated brand assets, from patterns to brand video, were designed to celebrate the diversity of fans and European football. [1] The slogan reinforces the message of unity, togetherness and inclusion. [2]
The base colours of the tournament logo are drawn from the national flags of the 55 UEFA member associations in various combinations. [3]
Typography and Design
As part of the wider brand identity, VMLY&R Branding created a bespoke typography based on all alphabets used in Europe, so that the type would always appear in its true form rather than being adapted from a single primary alphabet. The typography was developed through a process that included all characters equally, influenced by all European languages. [4]
