The A-League Men is the top-tier professional men’s soccer league in Australia and New Zealand, operated under the A-Leagues umbrella alongside the A-League Women and youth competitions. The league’s current visual identity dates to September 2021, when the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) unified its competitions under a single A-Leagues banner with a new logo and naming structure.[1]
Design and History
The A-League was established in 2004 as the successor to the National Soccer League. Its first logo, used from 2004 to 2017, featured eight “A” shapes representing the eight founding clubs.[2]
In January 2017, Football Federation Australia (FFA) unveiled a new look for the A-League, W-League and Y-League ahead of the 2017-18 season. The brand strategy and design were developed by FFA’s brand agency Hulsbosch Design, working with FFA management and club chairmen Scott Barlow of Sydney FC and Simon Pearce of Melbourne City FC.[3] The modernised football icon was inspired by football’s three points of difference: atmosphere, diversity and unity.[4] For the first time in Australian sport, the league brand was designed to be fluid, incorporating the colours of clubs competing in the league when used within club marketing and collateral.[3]
In September 2021, the APL, which had taken over operation of the professional leagues from FFA, launched a unified rebranding. The A-League, W-League and Y-League were brought under the single A-Leagues banner, with the men’s competition renamed A-League Men.[1] The new logo replaced the 2017 football-shaped mark with a minimalist design: a circle and a slash forming a stylised letter “A”, with the word “LEAGUE” and the competition descriptor (“MEN” or “WOMEN”) below.[5]
The new mark drew immediate criticism from fans who noted its resemblance to the logo of Adelaide Building Consultancy, an Australian construction company. The APL confirmed it had trademarked the new logo under 11 classes and stated that all required registrations had taken place within a brand development strategy that had been in process for many months.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2021 A-Leagues logo was designed to be gender-neutral, avoiding gender stereotypes in its depiction of the sport. The mark consists of two geometric shapes forming an “A”, representing a ball and a player without gendered cues.[7] The colour palette chosen for the identity was described as neutral and contemporary, avoiding gendered colour associations.[7]
APL managing director Danny Townsend framed the unified branding as a statement about equality: “This is not men’s football or women’s football, this is just football.”[7]
Typography and Design
The 2021 A-Leagues logo uses a custom sans-serif typeface for the “LEAGUE” wordmark and competition descriptor, set below the geometric “A” mark.[8] The mark itself is composed of a solid circle positioned at the base of a diagonal slash, together forming the stylised letter “A”.[9]
The logo appears on the jerseys of every club in the A-Leagues. It appears in gold on the jerseys of league champions in the season following their grand final victory.[10]
