AIK (Allmänna Idrottsklubben) is a Swedish multi-sport club from Stockholm, best known internationally for its football section, AIK Fotboll. The club’s crest, created in 1898, is one of the oldest continuously used emblems in European football and has remained recognizably intact for over a century.

Design and History

AIK’s first club badge dates to 1891, created by board member Henrik Staberg for the International Gymnastics and Sports Festival in Stockholm in May of that year, following the tradition of depicting the equipment of the club’s various sports.[1] In 1898, the club’s board announced a prize competition for a new emblem. The winning entry came from Fritz Carlsson (later Carling), a club member who became Swedish champion for AIK in both football and athletics.[2] The first badge from 1891 was used until 1898, when Carlsson-Carling’s design was adopted.[3]

The crest went through several variations before settling into a stable form. From 1936 onward, the emblem existed in essentially three different executions leading up to the 1970s, with the later versions drifting considerably from Carlsson-Carling’s original.[2] The version from May 1975 became the basis for the mark used throughout the 2000s.[2]

In late 2022, AIK introduced a refined version of the crest. The club described the update as a restoration rather than a redesign, noting that the previous original had details that were too fragile for print, difficult to see on small screens, and contained inconsistent line widths and spacing. The goal was to create a crest that meets modern requirements while remaining as close as possible to the 1975 original.[4] Specific changes included standardizing the line widths and roundings of the tower elements, making the sun’s rays clearer and evenly distributed from the center, rounding the end of the beam at the bottom left, and fine-tuning the letters and spacing in the A.I.K. wordmark.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

Carlsson-Carling designed the emblem with the intention of capturing three qualities of the club: tradition (the towers), strength (the beam or sash), and success (the sun).[5] Several misconceptions surround the symbols. The towers are not a crown but are taken from the coat of arms of Saint Erik, the patron saint of Stockholm.[5] The sun does not represent Solna, the municipality where the club plays, as Solna only became a city in 1943, 45 years after the emblem was created. Instead, the sun references “Sol Invictus” (the Invincible Sun), a sun god of ancient Rome.[5] The towers were modeled after the old Stockholm city wall, marking AIK as the genuine Stockholm club.[6]

The emblem’s colors are yellow and blue, not black as some believe.[5] When Fritz Carling designed the crest in 1898, he drew inspiration from the Swedish flag.[7] The club’s nickname “Klubben Med Guldkant” (the Club with Golden Lining) dates to the 1940s, derived from the golden detailing of the crest, including the letters, lining, sun, and towers.[8]

The crest received international recognition when it was voted the world’s most beautiful club crest in a competition at Mr. John Bowman’s sports shop in London in 1934.[5]

Typography and Design

In 2021, as part of AIK’s 130th anniversary, the club introduced a new visual identity developed by Rickard Frank Studio in collaboration with representatives from AIK.[9] The custom typeface AIK Display was created by the design agency Familjen, taking its starting point in the letters and numbers from the club crest.[9] A companion numeral font, AIK Siffror, was also developed by Familjen.[10] When the crest was refined in 2022, the typography of the year was changed to AIK Siffror, the same numbers but fine-tuned by the font experts at Familjen.[2]

The base colors of the 2021 visual identity remained black and white with yellow accents, as before. For occasions where the club’s sections wanted a more premium feel, dark blue and gold, colors found in the crest, were also used.[9]
