FK Željezničar Sarajevo, commonly known as Željo, is a Bosnian football club founded in 1921 by a group of railway workers in Sarajevo. The club’s name itself means “railway worker,” and this heritage is deeply embedded in its visual identity, which has evolved over more than a century while retaining core symbols tied to its founding.
Design and History
The club’s first crest was a locomotive embroidered on the players’ shirts by the girlfriends of the players, created around the time of the club’s founding in 1921.[1] Since the foundation of the club, the standard elements of the crest have been a ball and wings, which is also a traditional railway symbol.[2]
Over the decades, the crest underwent several modifications. From 1945 to 1992, a red five-pointed star stood in place of the ball, and various words were moved from one part of the crest to another many times.[2] A circle around the original crest was added in the 1990s, and the current design dates back to 2000.[2]
Today’s crest is no longer a shield but a circle, with the blue color having become lighter, and instead of a lily in the center of the crest above the wings, there is a blue-and-white ball.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The symbol of Željezničar, described as “wings and wheels,” is always placed on a blue background, the color of the working uniforms of the railway men who founded the club.[4] The blue of the shirts also references the color that, in the tradition of Eastern Europe, is associated with railways.[5]
According to graphic designer Edin Beslic, who worked on the club’s visual identity for the 2016/2017 season, “Today’s symbol of Zeljeznicar is not only a symbol of the club but also a symbol of love, unity, defiance and therefore we proudly wear it on the chest.”[4]
Typography and Design
For the club’s centenary in 2021, Macron produced a special home kit featuring a centenary logo appearing over the heart, placed between gold “100” figures, with the figure “100” also embroidered on the back of the neck.[6] The kit combined classic blue and white vertical stripes with gold pinstripes on the white stripes, and all the years between 1921 and 2021 written diagonally in a lighter tone on the blue stripes.[7]
