The America East Conference is an NCAA Division I collegiate athletic conference founded in 1979, with member institutions located across the Northeastern United States. The conference unveiled its current primary logo and brand identity on February 21, 2024, alongside the new tagline “Where Champions Rise.”[1]
Design and History
The 2024 primary mark features a bold wordmark declaring the conference name, “America East,” set within a shield design. According to the conference, the shield indicates strength and emphasizes the league’s tight-knit geography along the I-95 corridor. The mark also incorporates a star and an Americana color scheme of red, white and blue, described as an ode to the conference’s roots and its 45-year history.[1][2]
The updated logo uses the I-95 route emblem as its backdrop, with an orange hue at the top symbolizing a sunrise. Sean Tainsh, America East associate brand commissioner, said the I-95 shape was intentional and came as a suggestion from Tony Kornheiser, a Binghamton alum and prominent media member. The sunrise symbolism ties to the tagline “Where Champions Rise,” signifying the Northeast’s status as the first region where the sun rises and the determination of the conference’s student-athletes.[3]
The 2024 brand positioning and visual identity was developed in partnership with Legend Labs, a brand and communications consulting firm. The collaborative process began in 2022 and involved Presidents, Athletics Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, marketing and communications experts, student-athletes and alumni.[1] The new mark and color scheme began appearing on conference content immediately, with full integration launching for the 2024-25 academic year.[2]
Prior to the 2024 rebrand, the conference used a logo introduced in August 2013. That mark featured a block “A” surrounding three white stripes, representing the three pillars of the complete student-athlete: academic achievement, athletic excellence, and leadership on and off the field. The logo had a forward-leaning trajectory representing the progressive and forward-thinking approach of the conference. The 2013 identity was developed with SME, Inc., a strategic brand development firm, and used a color scheme of dark blue, light blue and white, departing from the traditional red, white and blue. A unique element of the 2013 design was that it could be customized in each member school’s official colors.[4]
Earlier conference logos also played off the word “America” by employing red, white and blue color schemes. The conference’s primary logo in the mid-2000s included a star element, which was carried into championship marks unveiled for the 2006-07 season. Those marks used official conference colors of America East Red (Pantone 192) and America East Blue (Pantone Reflex Blue), with America East Orange (Pantone 158) introduced on the basketball championship logos.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2024 logo’s shield design and I-95 backdrop emphasize the conference’s geographic identity along the Northeast corridor. The red, white and blue color scheme is intentional, described by Tainsh as “back to our Americana roots from when this conference started 45 years ago.”[3] The orange sunrise element at the top of the logo connects to the “Where Champions Rise” tagline and the work ethic of the conference’s student-athletes.[3]
The 2013 logo’s three white stripes within the block “A” represented the three pillars of the complete student-athlete: academic achievement, athletic excellence, and leadership on and off the field.[4]
