Shenzhen Peng City Football Club, the Chinese Super League club based in Shenzhen, unveiled its current crest on February 27, 2024, at a launch event held ahead of the 2024 season. The club, formerly known as Sichuan Jiuniu, relocated to Shenzhen at the beginning of 2024 and adopted the new name and identity at that time.[1]
Design and History
The crest is based on a circular layout, a format consistent with many of City Football Group’s sister clubs, including Manchester City, New York City and Mumbai City.[2] The club is managed and operated by City Football Group alongside CMC Inc. (China Media Capital).[3]
The new identity was designed to highlight the modernity, technology and innovation of Shenzhen as an international metropolis.[2] The abbreviation “SZ” is used throughout the crest design, with the two letters formed from simple, bright triangular shapes.[2] The central triangular motif fuses the letters S and Z, the pinyin initials for Shenzhen, representing the positive, innovative spirit of the Special Economic Zone.[4]
The triangular shapes are said to outline several well-known Shenzhen landmarks and landscapes, including the Window of the World, Wutong Mountain and the Shenzhen flower, bougainvillea.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The sky-blue background of the two letters is also the colour of the team’s home jersey. The club has stated that the sky blue symbolizes the sea, representing dreams and hope, and conveys the openness and inclusiveness of Shenzhen as a coastal city.[2][5]
