Amur Khabarovsk is a professional ice hockey club based in Khabarovsk, Russia, competing in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). The club’s current visual identity, introduced in 2014, centers on the face of an Amur tiger, a deliberate departure from the framed coat of arms of Khabarovsk Krai that previously served as the team’s emblem.

Design and History

The rebranding of HC Amur began in May 2013, when the design studio Quberten started work on a comprehensive identity package for the club, including logos, lettering, uniforms, and brand guidelines.[1] The main logo features the face of the Amur tiger, described by the studio as a “northern beast with thick fur and luxuriant mane.”[1]

The new emblem was selected through a two-stage fan vote on the club’s official website, with the tiger design beating a bear alternative. The result was announced on June 28, 2014.[2] Prior to this change, the club’s logo had been a framed version of the Khabarovsk Krai coat of arms.[2]

The logo was designed by Mikhail Antipin, a Russian graphic designer from Kostroma who later became art director of the Quberten studio.[3][2] The rebrand also introduced a new color scheme, moving away from the previous blue-and-white palette to orange and black, colors that were unique in the KHL at the time.[1][2] Quberten noted that the club’s management had to be persuaded to accept the orange-and-black combination.[1]

The new identity gained international recognition when the North American sports branding website Sportslogos.net named the Amur logo the best sports logotype of 2014, marking the first time a non-American logo won the award.[1][4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The Amur tiger was chosen as the central motif because it is a defining symbol of the Russian Far East, where the club is based.[1] The tiger’s thick fur, a feature of the Far Eastern subspecies, is preserved in the stylized rendering of the muzzle.[5] The design was created with “large strokes” to maintain recognizability at small scales, reflecting a trend toward simplified identity systems.[5]

The tiger motif has also been interpreted through regional mythology. In a special edition ethnic kit released by the club and Quberten, the tiger Amba, described as a sacred animal among the Indigenous peoples of the Russian Far East, is presented as a central figure in regional mythology and a symbol of strength, wisdom, and justice.[6]

Typography and Design

The lettering created for the Amur identity combined two techniques: graphics and calligraphy.[1] An additional logotype with lettering was developed for use on merchandise and other special applications.[1] The club also received a custom set of jersey numbers, described as having a “wild style” with slanted serifs that added an aggressive feel to the font.[1]

In later identity extensions, the design system incorporated patterns derived from the tiger’s stripes, which in some iterations are associated with the waves of the Amur River.[5] The club’s alternative KHV kit also introduced a perforation pattern on jersey numbers that repeats the tiger’s coloring.[5]
