Badak Lampung FC is an Indonesian football club based in Bandar Lampung, formed in 2019 when the license of Perseru Serui was relocated from Papua to Lampung Province. The club’s visual identity centers on the Sumatran rhinoceros, the animal that gives the club its name and that appears in its crest.
Design and History
Badak Lampung FC was introduced in March 2019 as the new name for Perseru Serui, which had relocated to Bandar Lampung to compete in Liga 1 2019. The club’s first logo appeared on its official Instagram account and featured a one-horned rhino head. The design immediately drew criticism from netizens, who noted its strong resemblance to the crest of Rochester Rhinos, an American club from the USL League One. The rhino head in the Badak Lampung logo was described as nearly identical to the Rochester mark, which also shows a front-facing rhino head with a prominent horn. [1]
Club commissioner Satya Djojosugito responded by clarifying that the circulating logo was not official and that the real crest was still in the design stage. The club’s Instagram account posted an apology, stating the logo was temporary and that the official design had not yet been released. [2] [3]
The official crest was unveiled on the club’s Instagram account on the evening of March 21, 2019. The new design differed noticeably from the earlier version. Reports described the official logo as red with a gold-yellow border, while the club name “Badak Lampung FC” appeared in white lettering. [4] [5]
The new name and logo received formal approval from PSSI, Indonesia’s football association. At the Liga 1 2019 launch event on May 13, 2019, PSSI Secretary General Ratu Tisha Destria gave the green light for the club to use its new logo. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The choice of the rhino as the club’s emblem was explained by Satya Djojosugito, who said the animal was selected because it represents the team’s qualities: strong, fast, and communicative. He also noted that the rhino is a rare animal nearing extinction, and that there were historical reasons tied to Lampung for choosing both the rhino and the Lampung name. [7] [8]
