The Georgia Bulldogs are the athletic teams of the University of Georgia, competing in the Southeastern Conference. The program’s visual identity is built around the oval “G” mark, which serves as the primary logo for the athletic association, alongside a secondary bulldog logo and graphic wordmarks.
Design and History
The oval “G” logo made its first appearance on Georgia football helmets in the opening game of the 1964 season. When Vince Dooley became head football coach in 1963, he redesigned the team’s uniform, choosing a red helmet with a black “G” on a white background as the dominant feature. Dooley discussed with his staff that a forward-looking “G” would be an appropriate emblem for the helmet. He had just hired John Donaldson, a former Georgia player, as backfield coach, and Donaldson volunteered his wife, Anne, who held a BFA in commercial art from UGA, to design the logo with the general specifications Dooley had outlined. Dooley accepted Anne’s original “G,” which fit his vision for a forward look to Georgia’s new emblem. [1]
Because the Georgia “G,” though different in design and color, was similar to the Green Bay Packers’ “G,” Dooley thought it best to clear the use of the new emblem with the NFL team. Athletic Director Joel Eaves called for permission, which was granted. [1]
In April 2013, the University of Georgia Athletic Association, in partnership with Nike, introduced a department-wide brand identity system developed over a 15-month period. The updated identity prominently featured and reaffirmed the traditional Power “G” logo as the primary brand identity. The long-standing color palette of red, black, white and silver was refined to allow for instant team identification. The graphic “GEORGIA” and “BULLDOGS” wordmarks became consistent visual symbols of the organization, and the secondary Bulldog logo was refined to reflect the strong, iconic characteristics of the animal itself as well as the spirit of Georgia Athletics. [2] [3]
As part of the 2013 update, the Georgia football, men’s and women’s basketball, and track and field uniforms were revised to utilize consistent new fonts and numbers in competition for the 2013-14 season, with all other sport teams phasing in new uniform looks over the following two years. [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “G” logo is described by the athletic association as iconic and distinct, signaling a consistent foundation that maintains brand equity. [2] The secondary Bulldog logo is described as strong, iconic and ferocious, accurately reflecting characteristics of the animal itself as well as the spirit of Georgia Athletics. [3]
Typography and Design
As part of the 2013 identity program, a custom display typeface and numeral set was designed for athletic communications. The letterforms are described as sturdy and powerful, drawing inspiration from the bulldog’s anatomy as well as the University of Georgia’s most notable North Campus fixture, the Arch. The famous cast-iron Arch, patterned after the arch on Georgia’s state seal, was installed in the 1850s. [3] The proprietary font was named “Bulldog Bold” and was utilized in the official website redesign launched in May 2013. [4]
