The Boland Cavaliers, also known in Afrikaans as the Boland Kavaliers, are the professional men’s rugby union team of the Boland Rugby Union, based in Wellington, South Africa. The team’s visual identity is built around the figure of a cavalier, a horse-mounted soldier or knight, which serves as the club’s emblem and gives the team its name.
Design and History
The Boland Rugby Union was founded in 1939 and is headquartered in Wellington, where the team plays its home matches at the Boland Rugby Stadium. The union governs rugby across the Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast districts of the Western Cape. The professional men’s team, currently known as the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers for sponsorship reasons, competes in the Currie Cup First Division. [1]
The team’s emblem is a cavalier, a term originally referring to a horse-mounted soldier or knight. The Boland Rugby Union has embraced the values historically associated with cavaliers, including courage, loyalty and honour, as part of the identity it wants to represent. [2]
The team’s traditional colours are black and gold. [3] In 2021, it was reported that Boland’s professional team would no longer play in the black and pink strip that had been the official team colours since 2012, instead returning to the traditional black and gold colours, with a white and gold away kit. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The cavalier figure is more than a mascot for the team. It serves as a reminder of the region and its people, representing a community that values hard work, resilience and pride in its origins. The Boland region itself stretches across much of the Western Cape, encompassing the Cape Winelands, farming communities and towns such as Wellington, Paarl, Worcester and Ceres, where rugby has been part of community life for generations. [2]
The team is also known by the nickname “Wynboere” (wine farmers), reflecting the region’s famous winelands heritage. [5]
