The Windsor Spitfires are a junior ice hockey team based in Windsor, Ontario, competing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The club’s visual identity has centered on a Spitfire fighter aircraft motif since the late 1980s, with the current primary logo introduced in November 2008.
Design and History
The Windsor Spitfires’ earliest primary logo, used from the 1974–75 season through 1983–84, featured the team name written over a white maple leaf on a red circle.[1] After operating as the Compuware Spitfires from 1984 to 1989, the team reverted to the Windsor Spitfires name and adopted a new logo for the 1987–88 season: a blue jet flying on a red shield with the team name.[2][3]
At a press event held at the WFCU Centre in November 2008, the Spitfires introduced a new primary logo and new team uniforms. This was described as the first major redesign of the logo since 1990.[3] The new logo features an aggressive, stylized WWII Spitfire aircraft set against clouds on a red, white and blue shield, with the word “Spitfires” emblazoned prominently in the forefront.[4]
The logo was designed by Hargreaves Stewart Inc., a Windsor-based firm that was the team’s new marketing agency at the time. The agency also developed a Graphic Standards Handbook providing complete technical specifications for using the logo in various applications.[3] Both the primary logo and shoulder patch designs were collaborations by Marcello Fontana and Shane Potvin, both senior art directors at Hargreaves Stewart.[3]
In July 2013, the team unveiled new home and road jerseys for the 2013–14 season. The new uniforms retained the airplane symbol flying through a cloud with “Windsor Spitfires” spelled out below, keeping the logo consistent.[5][6] The Spitfires’ primary logo continues to appear on the team’s jerseys in current seasons.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo preserves the team’s primary colours of red and blue, but uses richer, more vibrant hues and adds silver and yellow as secondary colours.[3] The Spitfire aircraft directly references the team’s name, connecting the identity to the famous Second World War fighter plane.
The new jerseys also featured shoulder patches with the Spitfire plane encircled by a gold laurel wreath and containing the number 18, commemorating former Spitfires captain Mickey Renaud.[3]
Typography and Design
The word “Spitfires” is integrated directly into the primary shield, appearing prominently in the forefront of the logo.[4] The available sources do not identify a specific typeface used for the wordmark. Four different logo designs were developed during the 2008 project, with the selected version considered the strongest by team officials.[3]
