Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, commonly known as Cultural Leonesa, is a Spanish football club based in León. Its crest is a heraldic emblem rooted in the city’s own coat of arms, featuring a crowned rampant lion, a surrounding orla (ring) with the club name, and a crown topped by a cross. The current version of the crest dates from a 2018 redesign.
Design and History
The club’s crest is based on and inspired by the coat of arms of the city of León. It features a crowned, rampant red lion, which is the symbol of León, surrounded by a red circular orla bearing the club’s name in white lettering. The top of the crest is finished with a red crown with white and orange adornments, representing the capital of the old Kingdom of León.[1]
On February 1, 2018, the club presented a redesigned crest, which was introduced progressively and appeared on match kits starting the following season.[2] The redesign was led by club director general Felipe Llamazares, who described it as “a change of image with a look to the future” and a nod to the club’s centenary, which was celebrated in 2023.[3] The design was commissioned from an external company after the idea was reinforced in a meeting with club members.[4]
The 2018 update kept the orla, the lion, and the crown, but simplified them compared to the earlier design.[5] The most notable changes were the removal of the word “Deportiva” from the name on the crest, leaving only “Cultural Leonesa,” and the addition of the club’s founding year, 1923, on both sides of the orla.[6] The lion was redrawn to closely resemble the one in the club’s first crest, and the crown was simplified with fewer ornaments.[7] The cross at the top of the crown was retained.[8]
Llamazares explained that the club wanted to simplify the crest, comparing it to clubs like Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, or Betis, which do not need to spell out their full names on their badges. He also noted that a simpler crown made it easier to print and embroider on merchandise.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The rampant lion is the historical symbol of León and directly links the club to the city and the old Kingdom of León.[1] The crown at the top of the crest represents the capital of the old Kingdom of León.[1]
In the 2018 redesign, the black color was eliminated and replaced with a more intense red, described by Llamazares as similar to the color of the flag of León.[6] The club’s official name, Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, did not change despite the removal of “Deportiva” from the crest itself.[7]
Typography and Design
The 2018 redesign was described by Llamazares as “simple, practical, and sober,” with more stylized lines intended to give the insignia a contemporary and modern appearance while respecting the club’s identity.[2] The club stated that the change was aimed at a modern, digital-oriented audience.[5] The simplified crown was specifically chosen to facilitate screen printing and stamping on products.[4]
