Daegu FC, the professional football club based in Daegu, South Korea, has used a sun-themed emblem since its founding in 2002. The club’s visual identity is built around a sky blue color tied to the city’s “blue sky,” with a central sun motif that references Daegu’s identity as a “city of the sun.”
Design and History
Daegu FC was founded in 2002 as the first citizen-funded professional sports club in South Korea and entered the K League in 2003.[1] The club used its original sun-based emblem from its 2003 K League debut through 2011, then wore a specially produced 10th anniversary emblem in 2012.[2]
In January 2013, Daegu FC unveiled a new emblem for the 2013 season. The redesign added apple tree branches wrapping around the existing sun motif. The club stated that the new emblem was created with input from fans, with the planning and symbolism developed in consultation with the supporters’ group “Grajye,” and the design executed by Lee Sang-won, a member of that group.[2]
The 2013 emblem has remained the basis of the club’s identity. In 2022, for the club’s 20th anniversary, Daegu FC’s kit partner Goal Studio produced uniforms featuring a gold-toned version of the emblem, applied using high-frequency molding technology rather than standard printing or patches.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current emblem retains the sun shape from the original design, now encircled by apple leaves. According to the club’s 2013 announcement, the apple leaves symbolize Daegu as the “hometown of apples” and the city’s development toward being a “green forest city.” The overall shape of the leaves is said to represent the view of Daegu Stadium, the club’s former home ground, seen from above, as well as Daegu’s basin topography.[2]
The 11 apple leaves on each side carry dual meaning: they represent Daegu FC being the 11th club to join the K League and the 11 players on the pitch. The number 2002 at the top of the emblem denotes the club’s founding year.[2] The apple leaves first appeared on the fan-dedicated 10th anniversary emblem in 2012 before being carried into the permanent design.[3]
The sun element within the emblem is frequently referenced in the club’s uniform designs. The 2013 home kit, named “Azul Sol II” (Spanish for “blue sun”), featured a sun pattern inside the shirt, described by the club as representing the passionate citizens of Daegu, the “city of the sun,” wrapped in the city’s blue sky.[4] The 2023 and 2025 season uniforms both drew directly on the “flame” shape of the sun emblem as a design motif.[5][6]
Typography and Design
The emblem includes the club’s English name, “Daegu FC,” in lettering below the central mark, with the founding year “2002” positioned above the sun and leaves.[2] The club’s sky blue color, described as its traditional symbolic color, has been a consistent element of the identity since the club’s founding.[7][8]
