Dumbarton Football Club, the Scottish side nicknamed “The Sons,” uses a crest built around an elephant carrying a castle on its back. The design represents Dumbarton Rock with Dumbarton Castle upon it, and it is based on the historic town crest. Dumbarton Rock, a volcanic plug, is said to resemble an elephant.[1]
Design and History
The club’s badge features an elephant with a castle on its back, a direct reference to the local landmark that dominates the town and sits next to the club’s stadium.[1] The nickname “The Sons” derives from the phrase “Sons of The Rock,” a term used for people born in Dumbarton.[2]
For the 2022/23 season, the club marked its 150th anniversary with a special amended badge on the playing kit. The anniversary badge included two stars, while other merchandising carried the same badge without the two stars.[3] The anniversary home shirt, made by Macron, also featured a depiction of Dumbarton Rock on the lower back, a nod to the landmark located right next to the club’s stadium.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The elephant and castle motif is not arbitrary. Dumbarton Rock, a volcanic plug, is said to resemble an elephant, and the castle perched on top is Dumbarton Castle.[1] The badge therefore functions as a visual representation of the town’s defining geographic and historical feature, tying the club’s identity directly to its local landscape.
The club’s traditional colours are black and gold, with the home strip mainly white featuring a black and gold stripe.[1] These colours are reflected throughout the crest and its applications on club merchandise and kit.
