FC Machida Zelvia (FC町田ゼルビア) is a professional football club based in Machida, Tokyo, competing in Japan’s J1 League. The club’s current emblem, introduced in January 2009, is a circular badge built around the letters “Z” and “M” and rendered in the team’s blue club color with gold accents.
Design and History
The current Machida Zelvia emblem was announced on January 14, 2009, replacing an earlier green shield design. The club stated the refresh was made to unify the emblem with the team color ahead of its push for J.League promotion, describing it as part of the team’s resolve for the move up. [1]
The redesign came as the club entered the Japan Football League (JFL) in 2009 and marked its 20th anniversary. The club color was changed to blue at this time, and the new emblem placed three white lines inside a blue circle, formed from stylized versions of the “Z” from Zelvia and the “M” from Machida. [1] The J.League’s official club profile confirms that the emblem uses the “Z” and “M” as motifs with three lines drawn to express the club’s basic stance. [2]
Before this mark, the club had used a green shield emblem. The original first-generation emblem, created when the Zelvia nickname was adopted, was hand-drawn by club founder Sadao Shigeta and refined by Ikuo Isogo, who worked alongside Shigeta in the push for J.League status. That early logo featured a triangle representing Machida’s topography, stripes evoking the zelkova tree and salvia flower, and a salvia-inspired petal shape below. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The three lines at the center of the current emblem carry layered meaning. According to the club’s official emblem page, they represent Zelvia’s principles of social contribution, regional development, and children’s education, while also expressing the trinity of citizens, supporters, and the team. [1] The J.League profile describes the same three lines as representing the trinity of “citizens,” “administration,” and “team.” [2]
The club’s official emblem page also notes that the logo mark places Machida city’s topography at its center, expressing Zelvia’s connection to the city. The blue is the team color, while the gold carries the meaning of “Pride, the pride of Machida.” [1]
The club name itself derives from a portmanteau of zelkova, the English name for the keyaki tree designated as Machida’s city tree, and salvia, the city flower. [2]
In December 2025, following the club’s first major title, the 2025 Emperor’s Cup, the club added a single star above the emblem on its new uniforms to mark the achievement. [4]
