The Erie Otters are a junior ice hockey team based in Erie, Pennsylvania, competing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) since the franchise relocated to the city in 1996. The team’s visual identity has centered on a menacing otter character holding a hockey stick, a mark that has evolved through several distinct phases over three decades.
Design and History
The original Erie Otters logo, introduced for the team’s inaugural 1996-97 season, featured a hockey stick-wielding otter wearing a blue helmet, emerging from a red circle behind a red “OTTERS” script. This primary logo remained on the team’s home and away uniforms from 1996 through 2017, surviving a uniform refresh prior to the 2009-10 season. [1]
Following the 2016-17 season, the Otters underwent a rebrand that dropped red from their palette and introduced a navy blue and gold scripted “Otters” wordmark as the team’s primary logo. [2]
In May 2019, the club announced it would return to the otter character logo as its primary identity for the 2019-20 season, with a modernized update. The redesigned mark was created by Tungsten Creative Group, an Erie-based agency that had worked with the Otters for eighteen years. [3] The updated logo retained the otter character but added “ERIE” to the helmet and refreshed the color scheme to the organization’s gold, navy, and white palette. [4]
For the team’s 30th anniversary season in 2026-27, the Otters unveiled a new primary logo, a secondary “Keystone” logo, and a dedicated anniversary mark on June 10, 2026. The new primary logo is an evolution of the 2019 design that brings red back into the branding for the first time since 2017, with the red shade slightly darker than the original Erie red. The helmet detail from the 2019-20 rebrand remains, with the main changes occurring in the colorway. [5] Tungsten Creative Group, responsible for the original Otters logo and every major logo evolution over the past 30 years, was re-engaged for this update. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 30th anniversary logo, worn as a shoulder patch during the 2026-27 season, features a large gold “30” outlined in off-white and red against a navy background. Three stars at the top of the logo symbolize three decades of Otters hockey, and the “Otters” script at the bottom calls back to the original shoulder patch worn on team sweaters from 1996 to 2015. [5] [6]
The updated Keystone secondary logo, first introduced in the 2019-20 rebrand and featured on the team’s yellow alternate jersey for the 2023-24 season, now uses red as the main outline with navy and yellow retaining their positions. The silver of the previous iteration was replaced with two shades of off-white to match the new primary logo. [5]
Typography and Design
The original 1996 logo combined a circular outline with an anthropomorphic otter character wielding hockey equipment, with the “Otters” wordmark overlaid in red with gold and navy trim. [2] The 2019 redesign modernized this character while adding “ERIE” to the otter’s helmet, and the 2026 update preserved that structure while reintroducing red as a secondary color. [4] [5]
