The Florida Everblades are a professional minor league ice hockey team based in Estero, Florida, in the Cape Coral-Fort Myers metropolitan area. They have competed in the ECHL since their founding in 1998. The team’s name references the Florida Everglades, and its visual identity combines that regional reference with the double meaning of hockey skate blades.
Design and History
The Everblades’ primary logo features an alligator head design fused in the form of an ice skate. The mark was designed by Barnstorm Creative Group, a Vancouver-based graphic design company. Barnstorm was contacted by Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr., who also helped found the Everblades, and who came up with the idea of choosing the team’s colors as blue and green. The team was founded in 1998 by Craig Brush, Peter Karmanos Jr., and Thomas Thewes, and was named based on the Florida Everglades. The inaugural home opener featured a pre-game ceremony in which a large alligator was brought onto the ice to pay tribute to the team’s name and logo. [1]
The core identity has remained consistent since the team’s debut, with the primary alligator-in-skate mark continuing in use. The team’s colors are green, white, and navy blue. [2]
Beyond the primary mark, the Everblades have produced several anniversary logos. The 15th anniversary logo, unveiled in July 2012 for the 2012-13 season, featured the classic Everblades gator logo set on top of the number 15, with a banner reading 1998-2013. It was designed by Boost Creative, a Cape Coral-based design firm. [3]
The 20th anniversary logo, unveiled in July 2017 for the 2017-18 season, was also designed by Boost Creative, described by the team as its longtime partner. The team’s announcement noted the logo featured a modern look while including traditional elements such as the classic alligator logo and the team’s green and navy blue colors. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s central concept is the fusion of an alligator head with the form of an ice skate, visually tying the Florida Everglades setting to the sport of hockey. The team’s green and navy blue color scheme was chosen by Peter Karmanos Jr., who came up with the idea for those colors when the logo was being developed. [1]
The team’s official colors are documented as green, white, and navy blue. [2]
Typography and Design
The primary logo combines the alligator-skate illustration with a wordmark reading “Florida Everblades.” The team’s 20th anniversary logo was described by the team as having a “modern look” while retaining traditional elements, including the classic alligator logo and the green and navy blue palette.
