The Flint Firebirds are a major junior ice hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), based in Flint, Michigan. The team was established in 2015 when the Plymouth Whalers franchise relocated to Flint, and its visual identity was unveiled publicly on March 16, 2015, at a press conference at Perani Arena.[1]
Design and History
The primary Flint Firebirds logo depicts a grey bird with a navy outline and white highlights, its wings spread out, with an orange background behind the wings and orange fire coming out of its beak. The bird sits above the wordmark “Flint Firebirds,” rendered in white letters with grey and navy outlines. Below the wordmark is a hockey puck in orange with navy shadows and a circular grey arrow, with a grey outline surrounding the entire logo.[2] This description matches the team’s own trademark filing.[3]
The logo and uniform concept were designed by Flynnagain Productions of Mississauga, Ontario, with CCM-Reebok contributing to the uniform design and color coordination.[1][2] The color scheme of the identity is orange, grey, navy blue and white.[4]
The team name was selected through a naming contest that drew over 5,000 submissions from Michigan residents and beyond.[5] The winning entry was submitted by Tom Barden, a lifelong Genesee County resident. Team president Costa Papista explained the choice: “Flint is a community that has been built and sustained on the fierce resilience of its residents, and we see the Firebird as a symbol of that resilience.”[2][5]
In October 2024, the Firebirds introduced a 10th anniversary logo for the 2024-25 season. The anniversary mark consists of two hockey sticks crossed to form an X, with the Firebirds’ primary logo on top and a navy banner underneath reading “EST. 2015.”[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Firebird name was chosen for its symbolic resonance with the city of Flint. According to the team’s president, the Firebird represents the resilience of Flint’s residents, a community that “has pulled through a difficult journey, and is now standing on the verge of great potential and promise.”[5] The name’s submitter, Tom Barden, noted the phoenix-like meaning: “Once I saw that ‘Phoenix’ was out, I thought that ‘Firebirds’ was similar. It still means ‘Rising from the ashes.'”[2]
