The Florida Tech Panthers are the athletic teams of the Florida Institute of Technology, a private university in Melbourne, Florida. The university’s teams were first known as the Engineers and very briefly as the Falcons before the Panther was adopted as the mascot in 1983. Various versions of the Panther mark emerged over the following decades. [1]
Design and History
Florida Tech’s athletics identity has undergone three documented visual updates since 2010. In September 2010, the university unveiled a new logo featuring a fierce Panther face at halftime of a women’s soccer game, coinciding with the relaunch of FloridaTechSports.com. [1]
In June 2019, Florida Tech introduced a more modernized Panther logo, a new “FT” mark, and several wordmark options as part of a comprehensive redesign of the university’s overall visual identity. The athletics color palette also changed slightly, with bolder versions of crimson and gray being adopted. As part of that rebrand, the university retired the usage of “FIT” in favor of “Florida Tech,” “FT,” or “Tech.” The 2019 identity replaced athletic logos created in 2010. [2]
In April 2024, Florida Tech unveiled its current brand identity, developed through a coordinated effort between the university’s marketing and creative services teams, the Department of Athletics, and Mongoose Sports. The updated identity includes a fierce Panther logo and several wordmark options. As part of the redesign, Florida Tech retired the usage of “FT” and now identifies as “Florida Tech” or “Tech.” The mascot, Pete the Panther, also received a fiercer and more determined look. The 2024 identity replaced the athletic logos created in 2019. [3]
Director of Athletics Jamie Joss described the 2024 Panther logo as “a symbol of modernization, strength and the tech innovation of our athletic program” that reflects the university’s STEM-focused education. [4]
The current Panthers logo is available in three variations: a primary mascot plus wordmark lockup, an alternate mascot plus wordmark lockup, and a stand-alone Panther mascot logo reserved for audiences familiar with Florida Tech. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The official colors of Florida Tech Athletics are crimson, black, and light gray. The preferred background colors for the Panther logo are white or crimson, and the logo includes a built-in light gray key line (outer border) that is required on dark backgrounds to ensure contrast. [6]
University guidelines specify that on light backgrounds, the words “Florida Tech” should always be crimson in full-color usage or black in one-color usage. On dark backgrounds, the words should always be white. [7]
Typography and Design
The Panthers graphic identity includes three wordmarks available for use when space constraints prohibit the full mascot plus wordmark lockups. The primary and alternate wordmarks may stand alone to represent Florida Tech Athletics, while the “Panthers” wordmark is a secondary element that does not stand alone and may appear on items such as hat sides or shirt sleeves. [7]
University guidelines prohibit altering any aspect of the Panther or wordmark, changing their proportionate relationship, or recreating the logo through scanning, redrawing, or other means. Retired marks from previous identities are no longer supported. [7]
