FC Shakhter Karagandy, the Kazakh football club based in the mining city of Karaganda, unveiled a fully redesigned club emblem in March 2025. The club described the new logo as more than an update, calling it “our past, present and future in one sign.”
Design and History
The current Shakhter Karagandy emblem, presented on 3 March 2025, is built around a heraldic shield whose stylized upper portion depicts terrikons, the coal waste heaps that are a recognized symbol of Karaganda. In the center of the shield sits a historical football, modeled on a ball from 1958, framed by the text “Football Club” and “Qaragandy.” Behind the central composition are two crossed pickaxes, described by the club as representing mining and serving as the historical tool of miners. Classic vertical stripes in the club colors sit behind the central composition, with the club name above. The club stated that all features and traditions of the region were taken into account during the logo’s creation. [1]
The 2025 redesign followed an earlier rebranding effort. In December 2021, the club announced the start of a logo rebranding process and presented two options for fan voting. One proposed variant retained continuity with previous emblems, including a black terrikon as a symbol of the miners’ glory of Karaganda, laurel branches symbolizing victory and peace, and a football as the symbol of the game itself. The club noted that the overall shape of that emblem was slightly refined but remained without obvious changes. [2]
In December 2024, the club announced a competition for a new logo, and the winning design was presented in March 2025. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The emblem’s elements are directly tied to Karaganda’s mining heritage and the club’s founding era. The terrikons in the upper portion of the shield are described as a symbol of Karaganda. The crossed pickaxes represent mining and are identified as the historical working tool of miners. The 1958 football references the club’s founding year. [1]
