Frankfurt Universe is the American football club of AFC Universe Frankfurt e.V., based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The club was founded on July 18, 2007 by 13 fans of the former Frankfurt Galaxy, shortly after the NFL closed its European league and the Galaxy ceased operations.[1]
Design and History
The Frankfurt Universe visual identity is directly tied to the club’s founding story. When the 13 Frankfurt Galaxy supporters established the club in 2007, they adopted the Galaxy’s team colors and carried over the basic idea of its logo.[1] The club’s own chronicle states that the team colors were taken over and “the basic idea of the logo” was continued from the Galaxy tradition.[1]
The Frankfurt Galaxy, which played in Frankfurt from 1991 until the league’s closure in 2007, used purple and orange as its team colors.[1] Frankfurt Universe’s nickname, “Men in Purple,” and the fan name for the home venue, the “Lila Hölle” (Purple Hell), both reflect this inherited color identity.[1]
The club’s logo has been described in connection with a purple helmet featuring a distinctive orange swirl. A 2023 report from the German Football League noted a returning player would again wear “the purple helmet with the striking orange swirl.”[2] A local press report from 2019 also described a large purple helmet displayed on a flag at a Frankfurt venue, indicating the helmet motif’s prominence in the club’s visual identity.[3]
No individual designer or agency has been publicly identified for the Frankfurt Universe logo. The club’s documented history attributes the logo’s concept to the Frankfurt Galaxy tradition rather than to a specific creator.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The documented meaning of the Frankfurt Universe identity is rooted in continuity. The club was founded specifically to preserve the football culture and community that had developed around Frankfurt Galaxy, and the adoption of the Galaxy’s purple-and-orange colors was a deliberate act by the founders.[1] The club’s chronicle describes the goal as continuing the fans’ philosophy and supporting “the purple football tradition in Frankfurt.”[1]
The nickname “Men in Purple” and the fan designation of the home ground as the “Lila Hölle” further reinforce the color’s central role in the club’s identity, both terms used by the club in its own history.[1]
Typography and Design
The specific typeface used in the Frankfurt Universe logo has not been identified in the club’s publicly available materials. The club’s official website does not publish a formal brand guide with typography specifications or exact color values.[1] The club’s documented colors are purple and orange, inherited from Frankfurt Galaxy, with the helmet-and-swirl motif serving as the recognizable visual element.[2]
