The Washington Mystics are a professional women’s basketball team in the WNBA, based in Washington, D.C., and owned by Monumental Sports & Entertainment. The team’s visual identity has undergone two distinct eras since the franchise began play in 1998, with the most significant change coming in late 2010 when the club aligned its colors with its parent company’s brand.
Design and History
The Mystics’ original logo, used from 1998 through 2010, featured the word “Mystics” with a hoop on a wavy banner, rendered in the team’s early color scheme of blue, bronze and white.[1][2]
On December 2, 2010, the team announced it had changed its official colors. At an event introducing new general manager and head coach Trudi Lacey, the Mystics revealed a new logo and uniforms with red (PMS 186), navy (PMS 289), silver (PMS 877) and white as the official team colors.[3][4] The change was made to align the Mystics more closely with the overall Monumental Sports & Entertainment brand, which also owns the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals.[3][5] The shift followed Monumental Sports’ own rebranding in July 2010, when the company released its new identity featuring a red “M” and star representing Washington, D.C.[6]
The current primary logo, in use since 2010, is a shield or crest design featuring the words “Washington Mystics” with a stylized basketball trailing mist or fog and a stylized basketball net.[7]
For the team’s 25th anniversary season in 2022, the Mystics unveiled a special anniversary logo inspired by the grooves of a basketball. According to the team, the logo was “modern yet features call backs to the Mystics’ early days,” with custom “25” numbering inspired by the team’s historical uniform numbering.[8][1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2010 color change was explicitly tied to brand alignment with Monumental Sports & Entertainment rather than to any symbolic meaning.[3] The trademark registration for the current logo describes the mark’s elements, including the stylized basketball with trailing mist or fog and the basketball net inside a shield or crest, but does not assign symbolic meaning to those elements.[7]
For the 25th anniversary logo, the team stated that silver, part of the team color palette, represents and is associated with a 25th anniversary celebration. Joined with navy, also part of the team color scheme, the team said it “emphasizes the franchise’s stability, strength, authority, and our connection to the most powerful city in the world.”[8][1]
Typography and Design
The trademark registration confirms the logo’s structure as a shield or crest containing the team name, a stylized basketball with trailing mist or fog, and a stylized basketball net.[7] The official team colors, established in December 2010, are red (PMS 186), navy (PMS 289), silver (PMS 877) and white.[3]
