The Gastonia Honey Hunters are a professional baseball team based in Gastonia, North Carolina, competing in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The club unveiled its name, logo and colors on January 13, 2021, ahead of its inaugural season that year. The team’s primary logo features a honey badger, which serves as both the central brand element and the representative mascot. The logo was designed by Brandiose, the San Diego-based sports branding company known for creating identities for numerous minor league teams. [1] [2]
Design and History
The Honey Hunters identity emerged from a comprehensive naming process that included research, in-market focus groups, one-on-one interviews and fan voting on the club’s website and social media. The five final name candidates were Gastonia Fire Ants, Gastonia Hogzillas, Gastonia Honey Hunters, Gastonia Hotshots and Gastonia Uppercuts. [1]
Team owner Brandon Bellamy explained that the Honey Hunters name was chosen to reflect shared traits between the City of Gastonia and what he described as the world’s most fearless animal: fearless, determined and resilient. He connected the name to the community’s commitment to continuous improvement, which the team framed as the “hunt for honey.” [1]
The nickname also carries a local historical reference. According to the team, the name pays homage to Hunter Ransom, described as Gaston County’s first freed slave and African American land owner. [2] Franchise owner Brandon Bellamy stated that the name was partly derived from the honey badger’s fierce reputation and partly as an homage to Ransom Hunter and his legacy. [3]
The honey badger, scientifically known as Mellivora capensis, is not native to North Carolina or North America, but rather to most of Africa and parts of Asia. [2] The team’s official colors are black, gold, orange and white. [4]
Following the January 2021 brand unveiling, the club continued to roll out additional brand marks, uniforms, merchandise and mascot designs leading up to Opening Day. [1] The team’s official mascot, named Bam Hunter, was introduced in September 2021 after a fan naming campaign that drew over five hundred name submissions. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The honey badger was selected as the primary logo element to represent the spirit of the people of Gastonia, described by the team as fearless, determined and resilient. [1] The name “Honey Hunters” refers to the toughness of the honey badger and the ability to seek out positive things in hard times. [4]
