Sanfrecce Hiroshima is a Japanese professional football club based in Hiroshima City, competing in the J1 League. The club traces its roots to 1938, when it was founded as the football club of Toyo Kogyo (later Mazda), and it adopted the name Sanfrecce Hiroshima in 1992 upon joining the J.League.[1] The team name combines the Japanese word for “three” with the Italian word for “arrow,” referencing the “three arrows” lesson of the feudal warlord Motonari Mori, who is closely connected to Hiroshima.[2]
Design and History
The current Sanfrecce Hiroshima emblem was introduced for the 2005 season, replacing the design that had been used since the club’s founding.[3] The club’s official announcement described the new emblem as expressing “strength,” “balance,” “unity,” and “friendliness.”[4] The redesign was intended to represent the club’s spirit, its goals, and what is “typically Hiroshima.”[3]
The decision to change the emblem was made in December 2002, following the club’s relegation to J2, as a symbol of a fresh start. The design process took about a year, and the J.League board approved its use from the 2005 season.[5] The earlier emblem, used from the start of the J.League era, contained visual references to the club’s Mazda heritage, while the new design incorporated more symbolism related to Hiroshima itself.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s official profile documents the meaning of each element in the current emblem:[2]
- Crown: Expresses the ambition to become champion and to reign as champion.[2]
- Three arrows: Represents overwhelming attacking strength. Drawing on Motonari Mori’s lesson of the three arrows, it also symbolizes the unity of Hiroshima’s citizens, administration, and business community, as well as the three elements of “technique, tactics, and stamina” and the three principles of “spirit, technique, and physical condition.”[2]
- Shield: Conveys strength and solid defense, with vertical lines representing the six rivers that flow through Hiroshima City.[2]
- Ivy: Represents the supporters who support the club.[2]
The J.League’s official club profile similarly notes that the three arrows appear in the emblem, with the crown at the top expressing the stance of reigning as champion and the shield’s vertical lines evoking the six rivers of Hiroshima.[1]
Typography and Design
The club’s official color is listed as purple (violet) by the J.League.[1] The emblem also incorporates gold, which the club has referenced as a source of inspiration for uniform design details.[7] The current emblem is described as having a calm, European-style composition, featuring a crown above a shield.[5]
