The Hartford Wolf Pack are the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the NHL’s New York Rangers, based in Hartford, Connecticut, since the team’s inception in 1997. The club’s visual identity centers on a snarling wolf head emerging from waves, a design rooted in the team name’s connection to submarine history in Connecticut.
Design and History
The Wolf Pack identity was born in 1997 when the franchise relocated from Binghamton, New York, to Hartford, filling the void left by the NHL’s Hartford Whalers. The team adopted the Wolf Pack nickname through a naming contest, a reference to the “wolf pack” submarine attack tactic and the Seawolf-class submarines built in Connecticut. The name “SeaWolves” was initially considered but abandoned after another team claimed it first.[1]
The original logo, unveiled at a Hartford Civic Center press conference in 1997, featured a growling wolf with red eyes. The primary mark depicts a snarling wolf’s head emerging from waves, while a secondary patch showed a wolf’s head coming out of the front of a submarine on a blue and red star.[2] The team colors were described at launch as navy blue, white and silver with a touch of red.[3]
In 2010, the franchise was rebranded as the Connecticut Whale under a partnership with former Whalers owner Howard Baldwin. The Whale logo was designed by Baldwin, the Whale marketing team and designer Erik Carlson, incorporating the traditional Whalers green and focusing on the whale, Connecticut’s official state animal.[4] The rebrand lasted three seasons.
In May 2013, Madison Square Garden, owners of the team, and Global Spectrum, the new operators of the XL Center, announced the franchise would return to the Hartford Wolf Pack name for the 2013-14 season.[5] The team returned to the exact same logo and color scheme used during its final season as the Hartford Wolf Pack in 2009-10.[6]
For the 2026-27 season, the club unveiled a 30th anniversary logo featuring the well-known wolf head logo as the focal point, with the roman numeral “XXX” in the background to signify 30 years of Wolf Pack hockey.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The waves in the primary logo have long been part of the Wolf Pack’s identity, paying tribute to the team name’s naval roots and the rich naval and submarine history in the state of Connecticut.[7] The team name itself is a naval term used to describe submarines attacking in a coordinated fashion, as explained by Rangers GM Neil Smith at the original logo unveiling.[2]
The Wolf Pack name has deeper meaning than a catchy moniker. Connecticut is home to one of the U.S. Navy’s main submarine bases, and the name is an homage to a submarine class and the “wolf pack” tactic used during World War II.[8]
Typography and Design
The original 1997 logo was described by the Hartford Courant as bearing a resemblance to a University of Connecticut Husky, only fiercer looking, with similar colors of navy blue, white and silver with a hint of red.[3] The designer of the original 1997 Wolf Pack logo has not been publicly documented.
The current identity uses a muted color scheme of reds, blues and silvers, which has been noted as less vibrant than the parent Rangers’ colors.[8] The team’s official colors have been listed as navy blue, red, white and silver.[9]
