ERC Ingolstadt, the professional ice hockey club based in Ingolstadt, Germany, competes in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) and is commonly known by the nickname “Die Panther” (The Panthers). The club’s visual identity centers on a panther head emblem, a motif that has been central to the club’s branding since a significant redesign in 2002.
Design and History
The current ERC Ingolstadt logo features a panther head set within a diamond-shaped background. The club’s official team colors are blue and white, as listed by the club’s entry in the DEL directory.[1]
The most significant change to the club’s visual identity occurred in 2002, following the club’s promotion to the DEL. According to the club’s official announcement from June 2002, the ERC was required by DEL statutes to separate the nickname “Die Panther” from its official club name, which was changed to “ERC Ingolstadt Eishockeyclub GmbH.”[2]
More importantly, the club was forced to change its logo because its similarity to the logo of neighboring club Augsburg was unmistakable. The club’s marketing manager at the time, Andreas Schmidt, stated that the club decided to keep the panther in modified form as part of the new logo to preserve fan identification with the panther as the club’s heraldic animal. Schmidt also confirmed that blue, as the traditional club color, should remain a fundamental element of the new logo.[2]
The club initially invited fans to vote on three preselected logo designs via the internet and print media.[2] However, after a fan meeting on June 5, 2002, all three proposed logos were rejected. Instead, the firm juespi presented a new logo during that meeting, which found immediate approval among a large portion of the fans. The club then made the new logo designs available for download and invited fans to use them to design the future jersey.[3]
The panther head logo has remained a consistent element of the club’s branding since that 2002 redesign. Club communications from 2018 describe the “gestickte ERC-Logo” (embroidered ERC logo) on the chest of jerseys, supplemented by printed panther crests on the sleeves.[4] In 2022, the club noted that the panther head in the ERC logo was adapted to match jersey designs, appearing in a white diamond on the away jersey and a cyan diamond on the home jersey, rather than the standard blue diamond.[5]
In 2020, when Audi became the club’s helmet partner, the club noted that the panther logo was made more visible on the helmets than in the past, and the city coat of arms was added as a new element, serving as a counterpart to the traditional Ingolstadt coat of arms on the jersey.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The panther is the club’s heraldic animal, a designation that the club explicitly sought to preserve when redesigning its logo in 2002. Marketing manager Andreas Schmidt explained that keeping the panther in modified form was intended to maintain fan identification with the panther as the club’s Wappentier (heraldic animal).[2]
Blue was described by the club in 2002 as the traditional club color of the ERC Ingolstadt and was designated as a fundamental element of the new logo.[2] The club’s official team colors remain blue and white.[1]
Typography and Design
The club’s official communications describe the logo as featuring a panther head within a diamond-shaped background element. The diamond background has been adapted in color for different jersey applications, appearing in blue, white, or cyan depending on the jersey design.[5] The full club name “ERC Ingolstadt” appears in white lettering on jerseys, accompanied by the founding year 1964.[4]
