The Houston Rockets, an NBA franchise based in Houston, Texas, have cycled through several distinct visual identities since the team’s arrival in the city in 1971. The current mark centers on a stylized “R” that has remained the team’s primary logo since 2003, though the broader identity system has undergone significant updates in 2019 and again in 2026.
Design and History
The modern “R” logo was introduced in July 2003 as part of a franchise rebrand. Designed by Eiko Ishioka, the Academy Award-winning costume designer known for her work on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the mark was described at the time as a “stylized, twin-tailed R” that resembles a rocket’s nose cone at the top with twin exhaust trails at the bottom.[1] The redesign retired the team’s previous cartoon rocket mascot logo and shifted the color palette back to red as the dominant color, with silver and black as secondary tones.[1] Rockets VP of Marketing Tim McDougall noted that fan surveys showed people defined red as the Rockets’ color, and the team sought a “timeless look” comparable to those of the Celtics and Lakers.[1]
In June 2019, the Rockets unveiled a new secondary logo while keeping the “R” as the primary mark. The new design depicted a basketball as a planet with a ring bearing the “Houston Rockets” wordmark, an approach widely described as Saturn-inspired.[2][3] The team confirmed the primary “R” logo would remain unchanged.[2]
In June 2026, the Rockets announced a comprehensive rebrand for the 2026-27 season. The new identity restored the franchise’s classic red and yellow “ketchup and mustard” color palette, which the team described as “Rooted in the energy, pride, and championship spirit of Houston.”[4] The “R” logo remained at the center of the new look, though its white elements were changed to feature hints of yellow.[5] The rebrand also introduced a new triangular “global logo” inspired by NASA mission patches, featuring two quasars symbolizing the franchise’s journey from San Diego to Houston.[4] The fan-favorite “Dunkstronaut,” an astronaut dunking a basketball previously introduced as a City Edition design, became an official permanent secondary logo.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to the team, the Rockets “R” logo symbolizes two rockets launching through a Saturn-inspired basketball hoop.[5] The 2003 design brief described the mark as resembling a rocket’s nose cone at the top with twin exhaust trails at the bottom, configured to demonstrate vertical motion.[1] The 2026 global logo draws inspiration from NASA mission patches, with two quasars representing the team’s relocation from San Diego to Houston.[4]
Typography and Design
The 2026 rebrand modernized the team’s wordmark with what the Rockets described as a “futuristic edge,” including the return of the signature lowercase “t” in “Houston” and “Rockets” as a nod to the team’s championship-era typography.[5] The custom typography was derived from the championship-era wordmarks, featuring a distinctive slanted presentation.[4] The official color palette for the new identity is Rockets Red, Championship Yellow, Black, and White.[6]
