Gyeongnam FC is a South Korean professional football club based in South Gyeongsang Province, competing in K League 2. The club was founded on January 17, 2006, after its name and emblem were finalized on October 25, 2005, following a public contest. The original team character was the frigate bird, called “Gunhami.” [1] [2]
Design and History
The current Gyeongnam FC emblem was introduced in February 2010, replacing the crest used during the club’s first four seasons. The redesign shifted the main color from orange to a bright red, described as “Luminous Red,” to gather stronger energy. [3] [4]
The 2010 emblem was constructed around the English initials G-F-C, arranged as a single main graphic to symbolize the ironclad shell of the turtle ship (Geobukseon), the famed Korean warship. The left side of the shell features the turtle ship’s dragon head, while the top sail and right stern are simplified for clarity. [5] [3]
In January 2026, the club unveiled a 20th anniversary symbol set, including a commemorative logo and sub-logo. The anniversary mark incorporated the original 2006 founding emblem as a small element, connecting the club’s history with its future. [6] [7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s official emblem description details several layers of regional symbolism. The Gaya wave-pattern bronze mirror (파형동기) at the top of the shield represents a flame, the sun, and absolute power, drawn from the region’s long iron civilization heritage. The decoration surrounding the wave-pattern mirror, together with the circle representing a football, is derived from the shape of a Gaya gold crown. [5]
The black diagonal line and ribbon crossing the shield symbolize strong power and dignity. [5] [3]
The official colors carry documented meanings. The main color, a bright and lively “Luminous Bright Red,” symbolizes the rose, the provincial flower of South Gyeongsang, along with fiery passion. The secondary “Luminous Yellow” represents gold and glory, tied to the Gaya heritage. The “Jet Black” expresses dignity and mythic, absolute power. [5] [8]
Typography and Design
The club developed a dedicated typeface called “투혼경남체” (Tuhon Gyeongnam font), which was applied to jersey numbers for the 20th anniversary season uniforms. [9]
The diagonal stripe motif, a signature element of the club’s kit design since 2012, has been repeatedly tied to the emblem’s visual language. In 2017, the club returned to the diagonal design and incorporated the wave-pattern mirror from the emblem onto the sleeves, along with a turtle ship-shaped GFC calligraphy on the back of the jersey.
