Jagiellonia Białystok is a Polish football club based in Białystok, competing in the Ekstraklasa. The club’s visual identity is built around a shield-shaped crest featuring a stylized letter “J”, known among supporters as the “Jotka”. The crest uses the club’s traditional yellow and red colors, with the letter rendered in black.

Design and History

The club’s heraldic tradition dates to 1932, when the name “Jagiellonia” first appeared and the logo adopted yellow-red colors with the “Jotka” in the center. According to club lore, the original crest was conceived by Maximilian Ludertowicz, a prominent local sports activist, though this attribution is not confirmed in written sources. In that first version, the black “J” was set against red on top and yellow on the bottom, the reverse of the current arrangement. The crest changed in 1935 when the club came under military control and the inscription “WKS” was added to the top of the shield. After World War II, the club returned to the 1932 design without the military addition. When the club was reactivated in the 1956/57 season, a new version appeared with a more rounded shield, a more ornate “Jotka”, and the colors reversed so that yellow moved to the top and red to the bottom. That version remained in use until the late 1980s. Around 1987-1989, the crest was refreshed into a form resembling the current mark, which then functioned until 2006, with a brief period in the late 1990s when sponsor elements from Wersal Podlaski were added to the design. [1]

In 2006, the club was forced to abandon the then-current crest after a former board member of the BKS Jagiellonia association registered the mark as his own property in the Patent Office and demanded financial compensation for its use. The club and supporters jointly created a replacement logo inspired by the pre-war 1932 crest, using an authentic historical emblem displayed in the Jaga Pub as a model. The initiative was led by Jarosław Dunda, the club’s current curator. The replacement was intended as a temporary solution until ownership of the original mark could be resolved. [2] [3]

After a fan acquired the rights to the older emblem and offered to return it to the club, a referendum was organized in January 2020 as part of the club’s centenary celebrations. Supporters voted overwhelmingly, with 3,618 of 4,322 participants (84%) choosing to restore the “old Jotka” that had been used in 1989-1999 and 2003-2006. The restored crest appeared on match shirts starting with the autumn round of the 2020/2021 season. [4] [5]

Following the club’s first Polish championship in the 2023/24 season, a white star was added above the crest on match kits, marking the title per Ekstraklasa regulations. [6] [7]

Meaning and Symbolism

The central element of the crest is the letter “J”, which directly references the club’s name, Jagiellonia. The black letter is set against the club’s yellow and red colors, which have been associated with the team since the 1932 crest was introduced. [1] The white star added above the crest after the 2023/24 season symbolizes the club’s first Polish championship. [6]
