Mansfield Town Football Club, nicknamed “The Stags,” is a professional club based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, that plays in amber and blue. The club’s visual identity has centered on the stag since the 1960s, and the current crest pairs a stag’s head with the club’s traditional colors.[1]
Design and History
The club began as Mansfield Wesleyans in 1897, linked to the Wesleyan church on Bridge Street, and changed its name to Mansfield Town in 1910.[2] The “Stags” nickname emerged in the 1920s, around the same time the club adopted its amber and blue colors.[3] The nickname is most likely derived from the stags on the town’s coat of arms and the club’s proximity to Sherwood Forest.[3]
Before adopting the stag, the club’s badge drew on elements of the Mansfield Borough coat of arms, including a cross, deer antlers symbolizing the deer in Sherwood Forest, and an oak tree crest. The badge also carried the Latin motto “SICUT QUERCUS VIRESCIT INDUSTRIA,” which translates as “Industry Flourishes as the Oak.”[3]
The club’s badge has had a single-minded stag theme since the 1960s.[1] The earliest stag-based design, from the early 1960s, featured a gold stag’s head in a blue shield. Later iterations in the late 1960s and 1970s took different forms, including a round badge with the club’s initials.[3]
The current crest is shield-shaped, divided into the club’s amber and blue colors, with a stag’s head above the club’s initials.[3] The Library of Congress, describing the club’s website, notes the initials “MTFC” appear in the crest alongside the stag’s head.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The stag is the central element of the badge and directly references the club’s “Stags” nickname.[4] The nickname itself is most likely tied to the stags on the town’s coat of arms and the nearby Sherwood Forest, historically associated with deer.[3] The shield’s two halves are decked out in the club’s traditional amber and blue colors.[3]
