The Medicine Hat Tigers are a major junior ice hockey team in the Western Hockey League (WHL) based in Medicine Hat, Alberta, established in 1970.[1] The club’s visual identity centers on its tiger-themed marks and a signature orange, black and white color palette.[2]
Design and History
The Tigers’ identity has included several distinct marks over the decades. A hockey puck from the team’s early years in the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) era features the team name lettered alongside an image of a tiger’s head.[3]
From 1998 to 2003, the team used a logo depicting a pouncing tiger holding a hockey stick, with the stick intertwined with the “S” in the “TIGERS” wordmark.[4] This mark was later featured on throwback jerseys the team wore in March 2025.[4]
For the 2026-27 season, the franchise unveiled new home and away jerseys featuring the original Tigers script crest, described by the club as the “iconic Tigers script crest” with authentic detailing.[2] The script “Tigers” wordmark on the front of the jersey is white with a black outline, mimicking what the team wore in the years after its founding in 1970.[5] The jerseys use the club’s signature orange, black and white color palette.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The team’s tiger imagery is rooted in the city’s own heraldic tradition. The City of Medicine Hat coat of arms features a tiger (described in heraldry as a “tyger”) as a supporter, representing the energy and dynamism of the city.[7] The club’s orange and black colors are consistently described as its signature palette across its current branding.[2]
