The Fort Wayne Komets are a minor professional ice hockey team based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, competing in the ECHL since 2012. The franchise traces its origins to 1952, when the team was founded as a charter member of the original International Hockey League. The Komets’ visual identity has evolved through several distinct eras, with orange, black, and white serving as the team’s consistent colors throughout most of its history.
Design and History
The Komets name and its distinctive “K” spelling date to the franchise’s founding. Ernie Berg, one of the original owners, chose the name to suggest speed, flash, and excitement, and spelled it with a “K” instead of a “C” in honor of his wife Kathryn, who went by Kay.[1][2]
The original Komets logo, designed in 1952, remained in use for 18 years. It featured a prominent black letter “K” with a stylized comet image replacing the hockey puck.[3] In 1970, the team simplified its visual identity to a solid orange badge with a bold serif “K” written in black and outlined in white.[3]
A significant change came in 1985, when the logo’s primary element became a stylized “K” placed above a sans-serif “Komets” wordmark, accented by a stylized orange disc on the right side.[3] During the late 1980s, the team briefly moved away from its traditional orange-and-black look and fireball logo, but later brought both back.[4]
The current Komets logo incorporates only three colors: orange, black, and white.[3] The team’s official colors are listed as orange and black.[5] The 50th anniversary patch worn by players in 2002 featured the familiar orange, black, and white Komets logo beneath a large white “50.”[6]
For the team’s 60th anniversary in 2012, the Komets unveiled a commemorative shield-style logo that combined elements of the Kaptain Komet mascot design with the team’s primary branding.[7] When the Komets joined the ECHL for the 2012-13 season, no significant logo or uniform changes accompanied the league transition.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Komets’ identity is rooted in the comet concept, which founder Ernie Berg selected to evoke speed, flash, and excitement.[1] The team’s early logo depicted a stylized comet in place of a hockey puck, directly tying the celestial imagery to the sport.[3]
The franchise has also maintained a secondary mascot-based identity in Kaptain Komet, a space-themed character that has appeared in team branding for decades. The 60th anniversary logo incorporated Kaptain Komet, and fan commentary at the time noted the character’s long history with the team.[7]
Typography and Design
The 1985 redesign introduced a sans-serif “Komets” wordmark beneath the stylized “K,” marking a shift toward cleaner, more modern letterforms.[3] The earlier 1970 logo used a bold serif “K” in black with a white outline on an orange badge.[3]
The specific designer of the current Komets logo has not been publicly documented by the team or the ECHL. A graphic design studio that worked with the franchise on reviving an original logo for merchandise described the project in 2012, but no designer attribution for the primary mark has been officially confirmed.[9]
