The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is an NCAA Division I conference founded in 1946 and headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. Its current primary logo, introduced in 2008, is a shield-shaped seal featuring the founding year “1946,” the letters “MAC,” a five-pointed star, and three stripes in blue, green, silver, and white.[1]
Design and History
The MAC unveiled its current logo in late June 2008, marking the conference’s first major rebranding effort since 1987.[2] The new marks prominently feature the year 1946, the year the conference was founded.[2]
The redesign was led by a four-member subcommittee chaired by University of Akron Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades, working with The Joe Bosack Graphic Design Company. All MAC governance groups were asked for feedback during the process.[2] At the time of the launch, MAC Commissioner Rick Chryst said the conference was “excited about the debut of an updated brand… one that recognizes our tremendous tradition while remaining current in today’s major college athletics environment.”[2]
The 2008 mark replaced an earlier circular logo that had been in use since 2000. That design was replaced by the modern shield, which also removed the orange shade from the badge.[3]
Prior to the 2008 rebrand, the conference maintained two official logos: a primary “Conference Seal” and a secondary mark known as the “Speed MAC.” A 2006 style guide specified that only these two logos were permissible for use.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current shield design is described in the conference’s trademark registration as a “3-sided heater shield” bearing the numbers “1946” along the top-center, the letters “MAC” through the middle, and a solid five-pointed star along the bottom-middle.[5]
The inclusion of the founding year was a deliberate nod to the conference’s longevity. As Rhoades stated at the launch, “The MAC is rich with wonderful tradition dating back to 1946. The compilation of new marks embodies this history of excellence garnered in competition, in the classroom and in service to communities throughout the league.”[6]
Typography and Design
The 2008 shield design features the “MAC” abbreviation in slanted lettering across the center of the mark.[6] The conference’s earlier style guide listed green (PMS 349) and red (PMS 185) as the official colors for its pre-2008 logos.[4]
