Design and History
Barton College was founded in 1902, and its athletic teams were formerly known as the Atlantic Christian Bulldogs before the institution adopted the Barton name.[2] The college has been a member of Conference Carolinas since the 1930–31 academic year.[2]
The current athletics identity centers on a bulldog head mark. The bulldog has long served as the school’s mascot, and a bronze bulldog sculpture stands on the campus walkway near the bell tower, dedicated in memory of Marvin Coghill and Dale Bone.[3]
In January 2018, Barton announced it would revive its football program after a decades-long absence, expanding the athletics department’s scope across more sports.[4] The athletics department currently sponsors 26 varsity sports.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The bulldog serves as the institution’s athletic mascot, a choice that connects the teams to the breed’s reputation for tenacity. The mascot is named Blue, and the school’s official colors are royal blue and white.[1] The bulldog imagery appears across campus and athletics branding, including on a customized conference table in the Bulldog Club Room at Wilson Gymnasium.[5]
