The USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP) is the national under-17 and under-18 development team operated by USA Hockey. The program’s visual identity centers on a shield crest that has been in use for decades, with a refreshed version unveiled in August 2026 for the 2026-27 season.
Design and History
The NTDP’s shield logo was originally designed by the late Jim Johannson, a longtime USA Hockey executive who played an instrumental role in the program’s growth and the development of USA Hockey Arena.[1] Johannson, known as “JJ” among friends and family, is credited as the designer of the crest that has represented the program for decades.[1]
In August 2026, the NTDP unveiled a refreshed version of its shield ahead of the 2026-27 season. The update was described as a subtle change to the color palette while preserving the identity and tradition that have represented the program for decades.[1] The refreshed shield remains based on Johannson’s original design.[1]
In September 2021, the program unveiled a special 25th anniversary logo, also based on the NTDP crest designed by Johannson.[2] The anniversary mark was worn on the left shoulder of the team’s throwback 1996-style uniforms later that year.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 25th anniversary logo incorporated specific documented symbolism tied to the program’s history. It featured 10 stars across the middle, representing each of the 10 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championships that Team USA had won since 2002.[2] The bottom half of the logo was filled with 13 red and white stripes, as seen on the United States flag, described as a reminder of who the team represents on the ice.[2]
Johannson’s original crest design has also been honored in program merchandise. A 2024-25 third jersey honoring Johannson placed the NTDP crest, originally designed by him, front and center on the white sweaters.[4]
Typography and Design
Official documentation describes the NTDP mark as a shield or crest, but does not specify the typeface used in the wordmark or provide exact color specifications. The 2026 refresh was described only as a subtle update to the color palette, with no further construction details published.[1]
