The Northeastern State RiverHawks are the athletic teams of Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, competing in NCAA Division II and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).[1] The university’s visual identity system includes the RiverHawks head mark, the RiverHawks full logo, wordmarks, monograms, and the Rowdy the RiverHawk mascot marks, all governed by official graphic standards.[2]
Design and History
The RiverHawks identity was born from a mandated change. Northeastern State announced on May 23, 2006, that it would drop the “Redmen” nickname and select a new mascot, a proactive response to the 2005 NCAA policy on Native American mascots.[3] On November 14, 2006, the university announced the new name: RiverHawks. The name was chosen by popular vote, receiving 1,345 of 4,204 votes cast.[4] University officials said at the time that a third color would be approved for the new logo.[4]
The new visual identity was unveiled in April 2007, several months after the nickname announcement.[5] The logo set introduced at that time included a hawk head mark, a full hawk with spread wings, an “NSU” monogram, and wordmark treatments.[6] The designer of the 2007 identity has not been publicly documented.
Today the athletic brand system is maintained by the university’s Communications and Marketing office, which publishes detailed standards for the RiverHawks head, full logo, monograms, and wordmarks. The marks are available in multiple configurations, including five-color, one-color green, black, and white versions.[2] The two image-only marks, RiverHawks Full and RiverHawks Head, are restricted to uses where the school name or monogram has already been presented.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The university’s licensing office lists “RiverHawks,” “NSU RiverHawks,” and “Northeastern State RiverHawks” among its protected trademarks, along with the university seal, the Seminary Hall icon, and any representation of Rowdy the RiverHawk.[7] The mascot Rowdy the RiverHawk was named through a separate public vote held in fall 2007, with candidates including Rowdy, Rally, Swoop, Talon, and Rodney.[8]
Typography and Design
NSU’s official color palette designates NSU Green (Pantone 341C, HEX #008265) and NSU Gray (Pantone 439C, HEX #4a4a30) as the two primary academic colors.[9] For athletics, spirit, and mascot marks, the approved colors are NSU Green, black, and NSU Spirit Silver (Pantone 422C), with a metallic Pantone 877 option available.[9] The university’s graphic standards specify that athletic logos must be reproduced only in approved color combinations and cannot be redrawn or modified.[2]
