Peterborough United Football Club, nicknamed “The Posh,” introduced a new club crest on 1 June 2026, replacing the badge that had been in use since 2008. The new identity was designed by Christopher Payne, who spent time in Peterborough speaking with club leaders, historians and fans, and attending Posh games both home and away.[1]
Design and History
The previous crest, created in 2008, was based on the city’s coat of arms, which features cross keys, lions and the motto “Upon This Rock”.[2] That badge also featured a towered crown, believed to represent the city’s walls, and the date the club was founded.[3]
The club announced its “brand evolution” project in January 2025, with officials noting the 2008 crest was designed before the mass adoption of digital media and new technologies, and that it created logistical challenges for retail and digital applications.[4] The new brand includes the crest, a suite of sub-identities and two new official club fonts.[5]
The new crest shows a winged lion holding a key against a Posh blue background.[1] The club stated the identity appears in two forms: a primary version with “Posh” sitting underneath the crest, and a secondary version with the crest on its own for supporting contexts.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The winged lion and key elements carry forward symbols from the city’s heraldic tradition. The cross keys on the city’s coat of arms are attributed to St Peter, to whom the keys to the gates of heaven were given, and the motto “Upon This Rock” echoes the biblical reference.[3] The eagle wings and lions on the city arms relate to gentry associated with Peterborough.[3]
In the new crest, the designer added a subtle heart shape in the key handle, referencing the club’s early Latin motto “Cor Unum” (one heart), expressing the club’s relationship with its community and supporters.[7]
Typography and Design
As part of the brand evolution, the club introduced a custom-designed typeface called Posh Type, intended for official communications, matchday materials, shirt designs and other brand applications.[7] The club confirmed two new official club fonts were created as part of the new identity.[5]
The new crest was first worn on the club’s 2026-27 home kit, presented in the club’s traditional Posh blue.[8]
