The San Francisco Dragons were a professional field lacrosse team that played in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) from 2006 to 2008, based in San Francisco and San Jose, California. The franchise was awarded in July 2005, and the team ceased operations before the 2009 season due to the economic situation in the United States.[1]
Design and History
The San Francisco Dragons primary logo, used from 2006 to 2008, featured a black dragon on a purple and white shield.[2] The team’s colors were documented as purple, white, and black.[1] An earlier version of the team’s Wikipedia entry listed the uniform colors as purple, black, and silver, though the later established palette was purple, white, and black.[3]
The franchise was awarded an MLL expansion team in July 2005, with original owners Michael Levitt, Chris Bulger, and Charley Biggs. The inaugural season began on May 28, 2006, against the Denver Outlaws.[1] The team played home games at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco and Spartan Stadium in San Jose.[1]
A trademark for “SF DRAGONS” covering clothing including shirts, jerseys, and uniforms was filed on December 28, 2005, by Major League Lacrosse LLC, indicating the branding was in place ahead of the 2006 launch.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The dragon motif directly referenced the team name, while the shield format followed traditional sports heraldry conventions. The black dragon figure was placed prominently on the shield, with purple as the dominant background color and white used for contrast and detailing.[2] No official documentation of additional symbolic meaning behind the colors or dragon imagery has been located.
